Dire Animals?

I've met them already in BG1, but what are they really? What seperates them from normal animals except for being somewhat tougher? Magical or non-magical creatures?

They are still animals, not beast or magical.

I can't help but wonder what happened to the imagination at Bioware: both a Wolf and a Dire Wolf?! There weren't any more animals to choose from?

How about this one: Dire Goldfish (comes with small glass bowl reinforced for travels)? Stupid Gaze 5 times/Day and immunity to drowning...

Larger, tougher and meaner than a normal budgie? Imagine his opening line: "I'm death come for you. Surrender and thy passage shall be quicker.". I get scared just by thinking of it...
