Only once, and man was it a boring game. No NPC to NPC interactions, and no NPC reaction to situations, and no romances. That's about 2/3rds of the fun gone.

But my party was Cavalier, Dwarven Fighter, Kensai/Mage (big surprise), Human Fighter/Cleric, Half/Elf Swashbuckler, and Elf Scorcerer.

Hehe I'm doing it rightnow :) This is for pure powergaming purposes, and I'm finding it all incredibly easy as I had all the weapons everyone was going to use picked out before I started. However it is nice to have a party totally customised the way that I like it. No wasted proficiency points and better stat rolls.

Beserker Half-Orc
Inquisitor Human (Duh!)
Kensai/thief Human
Kensai/mage Human
Fighter/druid Human
Cleric/Mage Half-elf

Actually, I never completed the game witn an NPC based party. I did BG1 this way and I was going friggin crazy because of those loussy characters!! This game is even worse in that the characters have more personality. It seems that I am the only one that really hate these "funny" NPC´s. Sorry, but I just prefer a more "serious" game without all the lame jokes and silly voices all the time. It´s kinda like an american movie. They always have to fire off a funny line somewhere no matter how serious the situation is. I hate that!! I´m trying an assasin with NPC party and even though I only just finished the circus tent I´m sick of those guys. Maybe I´ll just solo!
Anyway, my first party hconsisted of the following:
-Elven Archer ( :D )
-Human Cavalier
-Human Berserker(8)/Druid
-Half-elven Conjurer
-Human Swashbuckler(10)/Cleric
-Human Monk

"Multi" Party

Assasin - Sneak specialist
Cleric/Theif - Traps(Find/remove only) specialist
Mage/Theif - Locks specialist
Fighter/Theif - Tank specialist
2 spare slots for NPC quests

I had a lot of fun with a gang that did everything different to the run up and bash, run away and blast (normal) party. Could have stuck a Ranger(Stalker) and/or a Monk in there too but didn't. Also no set traps cheese used -ever- Curdis

Most players would make their own party composition AFTER they have played the game using the available NPC. If you have played the game for quite a number, you wouldn't mind the absence (therefore, boredom) of the dialogue between characters.

Right now, I'm not using any of the available NPC. I just dumped Imoen after rescuing her at spellhold :( (it broke my heart really, being her brother and all).

My party is composed of the likeness of 6 of the Nine Walkers in the Lord of the Rings.

Aragorn (me - Stalker)
Gandalf (dual, cleric then mage)
Frodo (fighter/thief)
Legolas (archer)
Gimli (berserker, specs in axes)
Boromir (berserker with specs in two-handed and long swords)

Right now I'm at Sahuagin City with my great party, they are using all the right weapons 3 ranged and 3 Melee:
Inquisitor Human
Barbarian H/O
Fighter/Thief H/O (specializes in Finding Traps and Pick Locks)
Swashbuckler-Mage Human (specializes in pickpockets and Hiding in Shadows and Moving silently)
Fighter/Druid H/E
Cleric/Mage H/E
Cleric/Illusionist H/E
We are what we repeatedly do, therefore excellence then is not an act but a habit.

General, yes the cleric/mage is quite good. Has more hitpoints than Aerie does and the stat rolls are something like this:
Str 12
Con 18
Dex 18
Int 18
Wis 18
Cha 3

As stated above it was designed as a complete powergame party. I cannot wait till I do get my cleric/mage into TOB, I have a feeling that nothing will be able to touch her :) Right now she is quite powerful but no doubt it'll be insanely easy once I get her up into the higher levels. I am on my 9th time through the game, I've gone through solo a couple of times and used different party members and numbers. I decided that after all that I wanted to create my ultimate party that I work best with. I have all the different types of spell casters, druid, cleric and mage. I'm taking them right through SOA and TOB.

I always play with self created parties. I tried the npc's once and I just wanted them to shut the hell up. playing with a self created party doesn't mean you are a powergamer or the game is too easy. right now I'm playing with three mages and I took the first stat roll for each one to make things more interesting. though I can't say the game is all that hard with only three mages, it sure is fun.

LOL i onice tried a party of 6 MAGES, all spealistist, one islike an illustrator, and so on, then i also had edwin, he's the best mage with all the spells he gets his hand on so i had to include him in the all mage party, anway you should have seen them in action in the underdark, they were frying creature so fast, i mean 6 mage all with sequired missiles, or chain congencigry with project images, or chain congencigry with abi's good ol horrid wiltering spell, all i can say is well i realy riped things up good, tho it would be hard when i get to tob due to all the magic resist so at that point i just retired them and started a new game, (see the post, playing on INSANE MODE)
bah bah, sig? Me? naaa.

I was thinking of using 3 precreated, and 3 NPC's. This would give me a good blend, and give me the NPc's for the quests.

When I first got the game, I thought about this for a week (no kidding). I then made the following party:
  • Kensai/Mage
  • Fighter/Druid
  • Berserker/Cleric
  • Monk
  • Swashbuckler/Mage
I kept the sixth slot open as the "guest NPC slot".

I quickly discovered that the game was waaay too easy and quite dull this way.

If I were to build a "perfect party" again, keeping ToB in mind, I'd probably go for:
  • Fighter/Mage
  • Cleric/Mage
  • Fighter/Druid
  • Ranger/Cleric
  • Thief/Mage

Thanks. Using SK I altered the appearances of Aragorn, Gandalf and Legolas.

For Aragorn I used the male human thief to give him that roguish look as Strider. For Gandalf I used the appearance of Elminster and for Legolas I used the male Elf Thief. Legolas looks more cool with the hood and appropriate at that. Since he is more of an archer than a melee fighter, Legolas need not look like the muscular type.

Too bas they do not have any appearance available that would give a bearded fighter (for Boromir).

I´m not sure about this but isn´t it only in the cartoon (excellent one, that!!) that Boromir has a beard. In most illustrations and in the upcoming movie he is clean shaven with long hair. The cartoon made the mistake of portraying him as a barbarian type, while in the books he is really a man of noble birth from a highly civilized city.
