Anyone having "issues" with the results of the Charwood castle Judging? I have the solution for all of you "Good" characters out there, and its more beneficial for you too....

If you've gotten to the end of Ch. 2 (Charwood Castle), you might be bothered by the solutions offered by the spirit in regards to guilt and what happens to the town's people, and what happens to Belial (sp?). Well, fear no more, I have the solution for you!!!

First, clear out Quint's side and get his Oath.
Second, clear out Karlath's (sp?) side and get his Oath. DO NOT summon Belial yet.

Third, we're going to summon Belial, but we're going to "accidentily" forget to cast Protection vs. Evil.

1. You'll (or your henchmen) need a +2 weapon or better to hit him.
2. Tomi works best, since he can fire his bow for Sneak Attacks. Make sure he uses ranged attack.
3. Place Tomi far enough away, that he'll be out of immediate harm's way. You can cast Prot. vs. Evil on him, it won't matter for the summoning.
4. Buff up with every potion, spell, and resistance that you can. Just take one of each potion and the Boots of Speed (auto Haste) would be nice too.
5. Toss the Fire Beetle Belly in the brazier (remember, no Prot. vs. Evil on you), then use the wand to cast Burning Hands on it.
6. As soon as you can start nailing Belial !!!

He'll probably summon a Succubus, but she is practically harmless, and not worth any XP, so just concentrate on Belial. Even with a 13th level Paladin and a +2 Longsword, I still had to roll natural 20s to hit him, but Tomi seemed to have no problem doing massive damage to him.

If you have Tomi, you'll get 339 XP. If you solo it, you'll get 481 XP.

As soon as you kill Belial, run back and judge that Karlath is guilty (he's dealing with a Balor to become a Lich? Casts the spell that kills the kids? He's evil and deserves it 100%). You get 500 XP and the town is freed !!!

Total XP = > 838 XP.

There is no downside to this. The town goes free, Belial is "dead", the spirit is free, you get nearly double the XP for your troubles, you do the "right" thing (judging against Karlath) and you'll get loot from the Mayor once you get outside. The only thing you miss is the opportunity to get the Staff of Power (or whatever it is) and its only worth 3300 gp.....and there are better staves.

I got some excellent screenshots of me fighting the Succubus and the Balor....laff.

OH MY GOD.

The idea of casting protection from evil didn't occur to me being a fighter (thus not being able to use magic items, especially WANDS). Having not saved before attempting this (godammned phone ringing...), I went ahead and summoned the huge demon thinking that he would talk to me.

So up he comes screaming "AHA!!! You forgot to cast protection from evil!!! NOW YOU DIE!!! HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAA!!!" or some such slovos, and proceeds to beat on my level 14 fighter chick and level 13 Daelan. I scream the less polite version of "SHOOT" in RL and start hacking back. Moments later Daelan is greeting Tyr in the afterlife and I'm praising Aribeth for having given me that stone of recall back in good old chapter one.

So before going back to hack Belial to doom, I saved, which overwrote any previous save within the past HOUR worth of gaming. Damn...

So down he goes and I'm standing atop a massive demon thingy and dead succubus thinking to myself, "Damn, that's not right..."

Oh well, all's well that ends well.

But what happens if you find Quint guilty? That's supposed to turn the town over to Belial. Who would be dead. So what's the deal?

If you find Quint guilty, it turns the plycatery (Sp?) to Karlat and he finishes becoming a Baelorn and destroys the town and there are evil things all around to kill.

Aren't Baelnorn good liches? You know, undead elven mages who sought to protect their kind for all of time and all that? I read somewhere that finding Quint guilty turned the place over to Belial, who was tricking Karlat in the first place. But if you KILL Belial, I guess Karlat would go on a killing spree.

And just wtf is a phylactery anyway?

The phylactery is a crystal that holds the wizard/sorcerer's soul in stasis, effectively making them immortal. Breaking the phylactery frees the soul to a/descend.

Killing Belial seems like the perfect solution to my Paladin. Kill the demon, prevent the "evil" brother from becoming a lich, free the townspeople, and free the Guardian. What could be better?

That whole quest is whacked for several reasons
A) Karlat was human thus he can't become a Baelnorn, he would become a lich
B) Baelnorns are good thus you wouldnt become one through a deal with a demon
C)Baelnorns don't have phylacteries, only liches do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only way to kill a lich is to destroy his phylactery, right? Then how come the dozens of liches you fight in-game are killed just by defeating them?

And...if a baelnorn doesn't have a phylactery, wouldn't that make him invincible (or at least unkillable)?

You summon belial after casting protection from evil and instead of asking him for his oath or making you powrfull (which doesn`t last very long anyway) you ask him for a powerful magic item and he gives you the staff of 3.3 grand.
We must bear these vicissitudes with patience and equanimity.
