Bard Advice

Post by Durwyn »

I'm making a new bard and I was wondering if anyone out there had any advice on making one. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Make him/her human or half elf - then take a level of fighter or barbarian.

I take a level of barbarian with almost every character - take the level early and you will get some good extra hit points which will help with early survival as well as an extra feat, faster movement, and one use of rage - which can help get you out of some tough jams.

I play a combat oriented bard with one level of barbarian - kind of like a blade/swashbuckler type character in Baldurs gate - with two weapon fighting, ambidexterity, weapon finese - then I use a rapier and short sword combo.

I use the spells for buffing and summoning purposes mostly. Makes a great solo character - decent combat power and some summoning/spell casting for flexibility.

My stats are:

S: 12
D: 16
C: 12
W: 10
I: 12
CH:16

Then start boosting Dexterity or strength with either items or level bonuses. Using weapon finese allows the dexterity modifer to be used for attack rolls.

Have fun :)

Some minor spoilers below:

I really like my bard. She's an elf - which helps with a lot of skills and feats. During creation I swiped points fromn WIS to build up Dex and Cha. I decided to not take any other class levels; she's a pure bard.

Str will be a problem until you can find bags of holding. *shrug*

Be sure to have a magic rapier made and take the Weapon Finesse skill. You'll never be a real tank, but the rapier's stun attack is very useful.

Sing sing sing! Not only in fights, but the bard song will help a lot of other times too - like disarming traps and bashing chests.

Ghostly Visage and Prot from Evil are vital spells. You don't get good nuke spell until much later, so use/buy wands and scrolls. Oh, there are some nice bard instuments out there, but you might not find any until Chapter Two...

Do all the henchman quests - Sharwyn and Bobbleknockle (whatever) have really nice items for you.

Take some skill points in Disable Traps eventually. Tomi is a drag - I only used the half-orc after chapter one (but continue to do all the henchy quests).

Take/wear every Cha item you can find. Buy buy buy! - by chapter two, money is pretty pointless. Once your Cha is 30, concentrate on Dex (for the rapier.)

Try to avoid taking money for finishing quests - if you refuse the GP reward you'll often get extra XP and alignment bonus's.

I would say to put only occasional points into spellcraft and lore skills - better to go for concentration and discipline. Ignore parry.

Sorry this is unorganized, but I'm rushed (at work).
