Beginner's Class?

Post by Silver »

Is a sorcerer a suitable class for a beginner to Neverwinter Nights? Or would a wizard with perhaps a level of rogue be better? I have had quite a lot of experience playing a BG2 sorc and find them very powerful and fun to play.

What's your favourite class? Generally I like to play a magic user.

I find that the most fun class to play, at least on most mods, is some sort of rogue multi-class (currently playing a 1 Ranger/5 Rogue through some solo mods).

If you have some experience in DnD (esp. BG/BG2) the new rules may take some getting used to, but for simplicity's sake assume that the easiest class with which to ease into NWN would be the ubiquitous FIGHTER :) . Excellent HP, good weapons & armor and Improved Knockdown make you a god of combat (make sure you have at least 13 INT tho ;) ). A cleric is a veritable powerhouse as well, in later levels, and have no peer in PvP...not even Timestopping Sorcs or Monks.

The first time I played through the solo campaign I played a 1 Sorcerer/1 Druid/18 Monk (and I was max level somewhere in chapter 3 or 4 thanks to the extra XP from my animal companion and Familier...it was a bug, but at the time was relatively unknown). Anyway, you shouldn't have too much trouble playing -any- class, just pick one (or several) that you like and go from there :)

Sorcerer is probably one of the more advanced, unless you're already familiar with all the changes in the spells from 2nd edition to 3rd edition.

If you're a total newbie, I'd suggest you stay away from spellcasters altogether. Try a fighter or a hybrid like rangers or paladins, that way you can learn the basics of magic while still having a relatively easy time of surviving.

I would agree with Yuusuke. Keep it simple in the beginning, fighter, paladin or ranger. Maybe if you really want a spellcaster a cleric is nice too.

It's my first time through the game and I chose Mage over Sorceror, principally because of the wider variety of spells available. I also started with "feats" of light armor and martial weapons and I'm amazed at how much damage I'm doing with a longbow and greatsword ... with so few decent offensive spells in the early stages of the game, it helps to be able to lop off a few heads!

Thanks. I've taken your advice and gone with a fighter type. The ability score system for generating your character really sucks though!

I'm having a bit of trouble with the mouse pointer graphic - it keeps flickering and an odd mixed up box appears around it. My computer meets the recommended spec and I have all the latest patches for the game and drivers for my graphics card installed. The graphics card is an "ATI Rage Fury Pro/Xpert 2000 Pro." Has anyone else had similar problems? Does anyone know how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem, not sure what to do about it either.

I took a druid and was happy. Both spelss and fighting abilities, in nice balance and quite enough.

Try setting hardware mouse to 0 in nwn.txt. It causes some mouse slowdown though, so be warned.
