New law in Greece

Post by Zelgadis »

Yikes. My condolences. :( Kinda scary that they can do that, and probably put many people out of buisness.
If I asked, would you answer? Its your problem. Its a deep, deep problem. I have no way to ask about that... I have no elegant way of stepping into your heart without tracking in filth. So I will wait. Someday, when you want to tell me, tell me then. -Bleach

OUCH! Im sorry, Greece....

Wow! Thats rough! I would never had thought that something like this would be regulated.... Geez...Talk about going too far with laws. Maybe shooters can be viewed as negative, but theres no need to ban all games from the country. I would be against banning any sort of game, unless it is truly inappropriote.

I wonder why Greece is doing this.
I hope no other country follows suit
I wonder if this is a joke...
I wonder why Greece is the country having this crazy law...

Above are the thoughts that raced through my head.

Plato: "Where did they get this idea?"

Aristotle: "This stinks."

Alexander the Great: "I was gonna come back from the afterlife and open a really neat little bistro in Athens, ya know, with dolmathes and dancing women, but now I think I'll just stay dead and hang out with that Sappho chick. And just in case you're wondering, yeah, she swings both ways."
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

An attempt to stop gambling...that has gotten way out of hand.

I read that, and I couldnt believe it. This step is too drastic to just stop gambling.

Well I would be mighty angry with the authority, and there could be civil disorder if this gets too out of hand, because the gov't there is acting too drastically. I can imagine the die-hard computer fans getting angry at the authorities:

This just in: Local computer junkies are causing riots in the streets throwing laptops, floppy discs, and monitors at authorities. Run for cover or else a Macintosh or Gateway computer could be thrown at your head! :D ;)

But on a serious note-I just realized our friend Demis is from Greece. Im sorry Demis. Hopefully it isnt as bad as it seems...

To tell the truth i've just been informed about this from here!(excuse my ignorance but its my exams season :) ) Before i say anything about it i'll try to get a few more details and learn more.

On a first note, this issue is not going to come too lightly on the Greek people, a protect is planned at Thessalonica on 10th of September when the first two Internet Cafe owners are going into a trial for this.

I think i can guess from where this started, a while ago some reports from the media showed that a few internet cafes in Greece were giving some kind of accounts to customers so that they could gamble on internet casinos and other gambling means, which i don't know many details, but this law is too much i can't believe the government would think to solve this problem like that. .

Read this on another forum also first, didn't really belive it there.

Sounds like some legislators have had a bit to much ouzo to drink while laying in the sun all day thinking of stupid laws to pass.

Hope this get abolished somehow, I find it hard to justifying comparing gambling (wether it be on online-casinos or not) to computer gaming.

It is like saying because the computer can be used for activity X wich we find is wrong, we have to stop activity Y because it also is done on a computer.

That is like saying, people can have sex in cars, we find this wrong, so we ban people from driving the car.......

People are stupid, and many people are very stupid.

Does this remind anyone else of Prohibition?
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Hmm - comparing laws against computer games to stop gambling (or something) with laws against drugs hardly seems plausible.

We might want to discuss this in a kind of "Governmental Jungement Errors thread" .... ;)

Ok after a further research about this, I have to say that the first time I heard it I got extremely angry but now I’m feeling very disappointed as well. This stupid law is so badly written than the Greek Government is going to have a hard time with it if it does not alter it or cancel it. I cannot believe the unawareness and misinformation that the people behind this have.

After reading a few articles it all comes down to this:

In an effort to control gambling after the events I previously said with the internet casino, actually this was caused because of some owners converted some gaming machines into gambling machines which they were controlling with remotes or something like that, they rushed (Elections period) into creating this law, and to be covered, the law was written with so many grey areas than you can get as many interpretations as you can think off.

I always thought until now that laws are very specific

For example:
  • Playing a game is forbidden but buying/selling games is not
  • If you take the law by letter almost every single item can be included (see the link as of what the law is prohibiting), thus is banned.
  • There is no, I repeat, no clarification about which kind of games they want to ban which places solitaire, chess and every other simple game that even OS include, computer games, video games etc in the ban list.

The law translated in English here.

By all these, there will be consciences because of this bad, inaccurate, unspecified, hilarious and stupid law. First of all, the nation that invented democracy has been exposed to the world with this by far anti-democratic act. And second because of this law, police and public alike can easily exploit the law, the police by selective law enforces and the public with sues (you can actually sue everyone with this).

Also the media did not give the publicity that the owed to so the law somehow left unnoticed (that’s way I did heard that on the news maybe), but now huge pressures are going or did take place. Personally I cannot see the law to stand as it is, and even if not canceled there are going to be huge changes with it, but the stain will stay.

Excuse my rambling and the long post, but I felt so bad about this. I am after all an avid gamer and I cannot stand this. Please consider that the things I said above are my personal opinions and conclusion after reading several articles about this.

For those who think or believe that same as me, there is an online petition about this here
