Discussion about my character: Can it work?

I created a custom class I called Magi, which is very much like the mage class but I had the chance to pick my own skills (I like this feature of Morrowind VERY much). He is mainly a destruction mage, with alchemy, enchanting, conjuring, ect as all his other major/minor skills. I did pick blunt weapon (for a staff someday) and unarmored as two of my minor skills. You can see I am making this guy the classic magic user as seen in SOOOO many other games. No armor, no weapons (other than staff or dagger). Just lots of a$$ kickin' magic to Bar-B-Q his enemes.
Has anyone else made their character this way? I know the game is designed to allow you to make yourself a fireball blastin', full plate wearin, two handed sword weildin', super god character. But I like the classic mage character (it is role-playin' after all).
I have leveled him to 5 or 6 now, and I am starting to have my first serious problems. As with all magic users (in other games as well) that are made this way, I am SUPER weak. Hardly any armor class, hardly any hit points to speak of. I have tried wearing magic sheilds (all the way up to 5th barier), but they hardly take any of my damage or prevent me from being hit. And considering my mana pool, just to put up spell protections, fight the monster down with my magic, and heal up after, is leaving me sleeping after every one or two fights. I am finding that my magica is only what I would call average or above. I have been selecting Willpower, Intelligence, and Endurance at every level up to get my mana and hit points higher, but I am still weak. And I don't have any really powerfull spells or large mana pool to make up for my weaknesses.
All this to ask: Has anyone else played Morrowind this way? Can it be done? Do you have any suggestions?
