Fascinating Drows, but at what cost?

Post by Nexus »

This is my party:

1) Human - Paladin
2) Half-orc - Barbarian
3) Drow - Ranger
4) Drow - Cleric
5) Tiefling - Rogue
6) Elf - Wizard

I'm still at the beginning of the game (I just saved the bridge) and I was wondering if I did the right thing putting two drows in my party...

I mean. I always try to fight during the night due the "sun blindness" of the drows; the cleric is really weak, she gets killed often and I spend thousand of gold coins to get her resurrected; both the cleric and the ranger, even if they're single level, get a lot to level up...

Is it better I start up another game?

I like my party, but I fear I won't last long...

Right now my characters are around the sixth level, but I had to sleep for a lot of days trying to raise random encounters 'cause my party was too weak to sustain the bridge battle...

I don't know how to get the best from my party.

I've equipped the cleric and the wizard with a sling and the ranger and the rogue with a longbow.

I must say the tiefling is really strong in fighting, the ranger a little less. Both of them have two weapons.

My paladin and my barbarian are great and I've no problems with them.

Have you got any suggestions to spare?

Well, you've got three ECL characters in your party, that is going to hamper things a bit. On top it, one of your ECL's is a straight ranger, the weakest class in the game. He may be a lot of a dead weight for a long time. Perhaps you might give the drow ranger a change in profession, to that of a rogue. Stick with light armor, weapon finesse, and give your tiefling one level in ranger and you'll have a pair of nimble dual wielding backstabbers. This will work great indoors for luring groups of enemies back towards choke points with the web/your choice of lingering area effect spell. Find way to get the tanks the ability to move throughout the web and hack up those contained within. Switch the rogues to range weapons to provide support and pick off enemies moving within the web. This strategy will work great for some of the encounters you'll be facing shortly.

Keep the cleric in the back rows for now, later on the cleric will become a good damage soak.

Definitely get your elf wizard a longbow, elves are naturally proficient with such. One sling is enough, at least early on.

By all means, do not scrap your party. Any balanced group of six has the ability to be successful. The other inifinity engine games have proven this.

For my own personal tastes, your party looks a little weak in the arcane department, but again that's a personal taste. You'll definitely make up for in the direct approach. The twin rogues, should you pursue that route, will cause a lot of problems. Don't forget to bump up the rogues' skill for using magic (scrolls, wands, etc).
Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.

Go DROW all the way!

My whole party is made up of 2 human Tiefs and 4 Drows. Vicious lil party but they shoulda made it where pallys cant group w/drow when making party or somethin. Either that or they sit and bicker all the time. (trying to remember which game i saw that in)

@Nexus: Cool party from a rpg view, but I wouldn´t recommend the ranger in IWD2...
Icewind Gate II Improved engine, third edition rules and the full BG2 storyline.

If you ever fall off the Sears Tower, just go real limp, because maybe you'll look like a dummy and people will try to catch you because, hey, free dummy.

Love is a perky elf dancing a merry little jig and then suddenly he turns on you with a miniature machine gun.

yeah rangers in bioware games...or maybe its just 3e kind of are lacking in the what i would call good parties...but i have a drow ranger heh...and yeah from the rpg sense rangers are much cooler....and so are drow campaigns...biorware kind of limits you to how much you can roleplay :( ...oh well i think your party will kickass :)
