i'm playing a monk this time around, quite an interesting class i'd have to say. not especially powerful, but quite versatile and very fun to play on a whole. one problem: there are many items that the monk can't use, and there doesn't seem to be any special monk items (at least so far). so what items are the best for monks and where are they? thank you

Welcome to the Gamebanshee Forums! BTW, you sound very familiar; have you posted here before?
To answer your question, 3 useful monk items (off the top of my head) are:
1. Tzu Zan's Bracers for HP and AC
2. Wong Fei's Ioun Stone for HP and AC
3. A Ninja-to katana for monk (can't remember the name), good for low-levels until your monk gains levels.

That would be the Scarlet Ninja-to...available from one of the bonus merchants.
There's also the gauntlets of crushing.

Spoiler (highlight to read) gauntlets of crushing are a reward for siding with the Sahaugin KING ie, don't side with the prince and get into that fake heart thing.

problem is, i would either have to have the guantlets of crushing or those tzu zan's bracers. which one is better? or should i start with the guantlets of crushing and then switch? any suggestions?

The bracers are ToB, so you could start with the gauntlets and then switch...as far as I can tell and assuming you'd be very high level by the time you got them, I'd say the bracers would be better.

A Monk might be quite Weak in the start of the game, but later he\she will become PRETTY Mighty.
About Wong Fei's Ioun Stone: it's not only for Monks.

Monks can wear Keldorn's Firecam Armour. As the description says "can only be worn by Keldorn and few others" or something along those lines. Good for the start of the game when your monks AC is still high.

Can monks wear the *Improved Firecam Armour then (w/ item upgrade mod)? I had a thief with UAI try and put it on, but it said that my charisma is too low. The monk needs to have a certain prerequisite of stats then, no?, to wear either the original or improved armour.

Only monks with 18 in charisma can wear it, even without the item upgrade.
As for the gauntlets, I think those of crushing is far superior, though the tzu-zun (sp?) bracers might be more monklike, rpg-wise. Suit yourself!

when you reach high enough level, the game engine will actually replace your fists with +4 items....invisible, so you never see the stats, but available when you do NOT equipp a weapon....
at that point the bonuses of the gauntlets of crushing....
(i am crushing your head..crushing your head....boys in the hall)
are pretty redundant...
the real benefits of monks are the magic resist and you almost are a vorpal weapon...

Soloing a Monk
Greetings all,
Has anyone soloed a monk through the end? Is it possible? Or do you need certain skills like picking to make it? Just wondering.

I have, It's quite easy! And no you don't need Lock pick. Although I would come in handy!

I've soloed with a monk too. I actually thought it too easy, though I, at the time, hadn't installed the Ascension.

Soling Monk
Thanks Mikhael and Bloodmist for the responses!
Good to know that picking is non-essential beforehand, any other things one should know before sololing a monk?

You're welcome
Well, in general, if you are going to solo. You might want to give yourself a bag of holding, since you, if not, only have one inventory to put items in.

Soloing a monk.

Funny you should say that, using shadowkeeper to add a bag o' holding is the *only* cheat I allow myself when soloing.
Otherwise trying to complete each and every quest becomes somewhat annoying. ;-)
Thanks for the hints! Been looking forward to trading in my Sorc and trying out a monk for something different.

I've found that all the doors and chests that you absolutely have to open can pretty much be forced, only ones with really neat things inside that are not important to completing quests are the tough ones.
