How old is D&D? And\or Forgotten Realms?

IIRC, The Forgotten Realms is about 15 - 20 years old

D&D started somewhere late 70s, or so I hear.

I was playing about 1979-80, and I know it had been around for a few years. I believe it's from the early 70's but didn't gain popularity till later in the decade. Not at home so can't reference my "ancient texts".
