FBI in Washington (Not DC)

Post by Weasel »

Any thoughts on the stump cutting in Washington (Tacoma)?

Ex military (US) lived in the house before hand. Was stationed at near by base. Possible told someone he had taken target practice on stumps.

Or is the FBI reaching for anything?

As of this morning (Thursday), they've got a guy and his stepson in custody who is a suspect in the sniper cases. He apparently was in the Army, although he was neither a sniper nor in the special forces, and was stationed in Washington state and is also linked to a shooting in Montgomery, AL.

There's some more news over on the front page of CNN.com.

One problem I think they will find is the whole copycat issue, even if they have caught the right person in this situation that does not mean that another person wouldn't do the same.

If you don't have a sniper rifle you can't shoot people from hundreds of metres away, it is that simple.

You are right sleep - it is that simple - so lets press the magic button that makes all guns go away and we will all live happily ever after  .

Sorry for the sarcasm - it is not intended to offend - to just point out that a simple solution to gun violence in the US is not simple - as I am sure you are quite aware :) . I probably should start another thread about this - but I wanted to discuss the growing violence of our culture and the influence of violent entertainment in the form of TV, movies, and - yes - games. While it is true that tighter gun control regulations would help to keep some guns away from the criminals - these regulations address a symptom and not the problem.

To steal the only coherent quote that Charlton Heston has uttered in the last twenty years - "guns don't kill people - people kill people". The proliferation of violence in all aspects of our culture over the past 20 or 30 years has led us to the current situation - where do we go from here - and how do we halt this cycle of violence?

I was being glib, excuse me, I do think it applies to some degree though, while I see the reason (however much I don't agree) for guns to be available I do not understand why high velocity weapons such as sniper rifles are available, it just seems daft, just like I don't see the reason for automatic rifles, you can't exactly shoot a deer with it and take it home for tea ;)

The fact is that if criminals want to get hold of guns they can, the UK has gun laws yet criminals still shoot each other, it is fact, the criminals in this country however are gang members so it isn't quite so random as the sniper shootings.

I have talked about this before but a TV presenter in this country (comparable to Michael Moore...but better) became a black market arms dealer within 8 days, he never actually sold any guns but he could have...it was very scary.

@ Weasel - last night when started this thread, I wondered what connection it had with the DC sniper. It's obvious today. Who would have thought that this would have roots on the other side of the continent. This guy had been a machinist stationed at a military reservation that trained US Army special ops snipers.

You think these are the right guys? Or is it just a coincidence?

The authorities have come out and stated that the gun has been linked to some of the shootings. Emphasis on some. :(

Strange events to say the least. A unknown call bragging about the killing in Alabama being tied into the killings in Maryland (Washington DC). Finger prints matching the young fellow at both places.

If this is the killers, I wonder if they had a spree across the US on the way to Washington (DC).

@Fable and McBane, :D (My wife said she is going to get on TV and make me look even worst.)
