New Role-Playing Gamer

Post by Khabbi »

Hi,

I have not played any of the previous CRPGs (like BG, NWN and the previous Icewind Dale).

I have played MMORPGs (like UO and DAoC).

I was wondering if this was a good game to pick as my first game. What is the learning curve like in this game as compared maybe to starting with another game?

I do enjoy these types of games, but for some reason have never really played them much. I like creating different characters with different skills, learning about each skill and how best to use them. I realize that my first crack at the game will probably not work the way way I want. I am prepared to learn a new game and I am aware that I might be doing a lot of reading to get up to par.

I have read that this game uses a new rule set than previous games, so would playing any earlier games not help very much anyway?

Any feedback on starting with Icewind Dale II would be apprciated.

Welcome to Gamebanshee and welcome to the IWD2 board!

I am sure you will find lots of support here - others will tell you what the game is like for sure. You may like to start with earlier games in the series - the first Icewind Dale or perhaps Baldurs Gate 2. However, don't take my word for it. I am also sure IWD2 will be a nice introduction to Computer RPG's.

Yes, I think IWD II is more difficult than IWD I. I would start with BG I or IWD I and then make my way up. Also, it's more fun to move from less sophisticated games to more sophisticated instead of the other way round.

Yes, some rules for IWD II are different from the other games in the series but much is the same. So playing these other games will prepare you well for IWD II.

Have fun!

hmm... but since u seem more inclined towards MMORPGs, i think u should start off with NWN (among the D&D games), since it's more centered on one character, rather than being party-based like the BG and IWD series.

I would also urge you, as a matter of simple economics, to start with one of the older titles first. They're cheap, so if you buy one and it turns out not to be your cup of tea, you won't feel as bad as if you'd shelled out mucho dinero for the newer games.

Welcome to CRPGs - once bitten, youll be hooked.

IwD is great for that, because you can make up to six characters at once and learn not just each character's skills, but also learn how to use the whole party's skills together to complement each other. I think creating a new party is the best part of CRPGs.
Start with IwD 1 first, because the references to it in IwDII will be more meaningful that way.

If you also like RTS games (esp. like Warcraft III), you'll probably like IwD. Approach it as a series of combat strategy challanges/battles because of its linearity.

Having played on IWD2 all afternoon now, I would recommend it to a beginner. It may be easier to break yourself into the 3rd edition rules than to learn 2nd edition first, then change!

IWD2 seems easy to get into, although I imagine the learning curve will be steep.

Compared to BG series it's way to easy. BTW the IWD2 char gen reminds me of Fallout :)
