NPC Auto-Levelling when joining Higher level party..

Post by Indra »

Playing through SOA right now as a 9/13 K/M, with just Jan for company. I took Minsc and Jaheira out of Irenicus Dungeon, then dumped them to level up faster. I haven't even left Athkathla Yet for the first time!. I know that NPCs auto-level up when you let them join your party at a higher level. Is there a cap for this? If I'm a 9/15 K/M and take Minsc in, will he be 15Lvl too, or will he just be the level he was after Irenicus Dungeon? Do other Npcs level up if you never took them into your party? I know Keldorn was at Lvl12 when I met him in the Athkathla Sewers, and
he was lvl12 still after I came back from the Underdark and went to the Radiant Heart. Is Lvl 12 the cap for NPC auto-Levelling?
Finally, Imoen. Is there a limit for her auto-levelling? I'll probably be Lvl16-17 when I rescue her from Spellhold. Will she be a equivalent level or is she capped too?
Lots of questions, I know..Thanks a lot for the answers, folks.

NPCs don't level up automatically. The reason why their level varies when you meet them is because there's actually a pool of them. For example, there are four or five different versions of Aerie. If your party is fairly low in level, you'll meet the lowest level Aerie. If your party is fairly high in level, you'll meet the highest level Aerie. Once you meet her, her level remains fixed, since that is the version of her who is now part of the game. The same applies to all of the other NPCs. I'm not sure what criteria the game uses, but NPCs will not necessarily match the level of your own characters. it's a very rough match at best, and none of the NPCs is higher than about 12th Level when you meet them.

There are three or four different versions of Imoen. The one you meet in Spellhold is not the same one that was taken from you in Waukeen's Promenade. The "Imoen" that you recover from Spellhold can either have 400,000 experience points or 1.2 million experience points. The version the game selects for you to meet depends on your level.

If you let a NPC join your party then kick him/her out, then he will not level up any more. If you don't, I think the cap is level 12. THis is why I like to have the party that I'm going to play for the rest of the game at the very beginning so I don't change it.

EDIT: too late :o :)

NPC lvls

Whenever I pick up a NPC (especially one that I dumped earlier) I use SK to bring their XP up to close to mine (usually a little lower). From a role-playing perspective, I think it would be more accurate that these chars are out honing their skills rather than sitting around a tavern getting fat and drunk. If your worried that you'll make the NPCs too powerful this way, just give them a % of your XP...like 80% or so.

The aptly named NPCLEVEL.2DA file contains the table that tells the game which NPC version to give you depending on the level of your PC. Level 24 is the highest it lists, and gets you the following NPCs:

Minsc12
Jaheir12
Edwin13
Viconi13
Imoen10
Yoshi12
Valyg12
Nalia15
Mazzy12
Korgan12
Keldor12
Jan12
Haer15
Cernd13b
Anomen10
Aerie11
Imoen213
