I just entered what I think are the cold marshes, west of the fell wood where I beat the treants. well anyway I ran into these barbarians from the black raven tribe and there are these rocks to move. What is their purpose and how should I move them?

As I recall, there's some sort of wooden barrier further south. You need to move the boulders so that a loose one will tumble free, and break the barrier.

Are we talking about the boulders at the Barbarian Gate in the Cold marshes?
You have to move the boulders untill you clear a path through them. I don't remember all the moves but: (spoiler ahead)

The path is on the second row from the right. You have to clear that row. Prepare for battle after moving a boulder. Eventually the attacks stop and you can move around the boulders at your own leasure.
