New portrait

Post by Astafas »

Hi folks,

Long time, no see - it's mostly my new work that has kept me away from the board (and from playing BG2). However, I just started a new game with a Mage(9)/Thief (I know, it's an odd combo, but it fits well with the character I wanted to roleplay) and could find no suitable portrait. So, I made a new one. Those of you who have been around a while know I've used the same original portrait before, then making it (Half-)Elvish. This time I've let it stay Human. As I'm rather pleased with the result, and as Kirith no longer accepts uploads, I though to share it with you here.

In short, and for those interested, I've done the following:

Using Liquidify, reshaped neck, chin and mouth and moved the armor somewhat.

Painted over major wrinkles to give the person a younger look.

Changed color on hair, eyebrows, eyes and armor.

Reduced contrast.

Filtered with Smart Blur.

Recut the portrait to give it the right size.

Now, go ahead and have a look! I think it fits well in style with the other BG2 portraits (the reduced contrast and, especially, the Smart Blur helped in that aspect) but am interested in your feedback!

Oh, no risk of that - I'm to strong for you! :p

Alright, I think... I'm soon about to have my Mage-class activated again, so we'll see. I wanted a Thief with the ability to use wands (before the HLAs) and to throw typical "Thief"-spells like Sleep, Invisibility, Knock etc but also with one or two more powerful spells on the repertoire (like a few Fire Balls, some protective Stonekins before backstabbing action, and a softening Cloudkill every now and then). He'll be equipped with Elven Chain and using a Short Bow and have a nice collection of Long Swords.

Can a mage/thief wear full plate armor?
Cause he is wearing one in the picture. Don't know if it even matter, but I thought I'd bring it up. :)

No, he can't. However, my Thief/Mage insisted on wearing exactly that armor (well, as can be seen, of course) when the portrait was drawn (something to do with "a more serious look", or whatever). I can assure you he took it of immediately thereafter. :D

Kirith has a few which are quite alright.

I tried using this one from IWD2 but was never content with the resolution/quality of the portrait:

Put it in the portraits directory in your BG2 folder. If there isn't one there, make one. Then, when you next make a character, click on Custom Portrait.
If I asked, would you answer? Its your problem. Its a deep, deep problem. I have no way to ask about that... I have no elegant way of stepping into your heart without tracking in filth. So I will wait. Someday, when you want to tell me, tell me then. -Bleach
