Where did those Goblins get that scroll ? ;-)

Post by Numinor »

I'm sure most of you noticed this already. I fight my way through Irenicus' dungeon and slay those little goblins, and always I'm suprised again if instead of dropping their usual few pieces of gold or some crappy gem, they seem to somehow have manged to steal Big-Bad-Irenicus' magic scrolls :p
I got Chaos Sphere and some other 7th level spells from them, and they're not the only low level monsters that drop fairly high level loot if you are lucky: the guards in the Copper Coronet are another example.
Also, there is that bookcase in the room with the Mephit-Portals that once in a 100 times gives you a 8th or 9th level spell instead of the usual cursed protection scroll ( I got Spell Trap last time :D )

Can someone here explain to me how item drops are determined in BG2 ? I guess its in the ARXXXX.ARE file ?
There are three kinds of people that no one understands: geniuses, madmen and guys that mumble.

I always though that loot was fixed, not random.
But I could be mistaken
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

Some loot's fixed; some is random. The better stuff is definitely fixed.

I can't say I ever encountered a goblin hoarding 8th level spells, but I don't recall what the little guys had in Irenicus' dungeon. It does make a certain kind of sense for them to pick up any trinkets they may find down there, particularly if Irenicus hasn't been along to look the place over, as seems to be the case.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
