Best level to multiclass fighter to mage?

I have a lvl 6 fighter who I want to multi to mage later on, whats a good level to do this so that I still have time to learn lvl 9 spells, but not so early that he'll suck later on as a front liner?

Sorry to say so, but none unless you solo. End game level for a 6 member party at normal difficulty is around 16, no way to get 24 levels in normal games, unless with a small party, in which case I think 6 levels of fighter is too many. Staying fighter or being wizard from the start is probably the better option.

oh ok thanks, thought I read the cap was 30, I guess thats for HoF though
