No more flashlink

Post by Stilgar »

Pfehh, read that just in time.
wanted to join next week to get acces to the Neverwinter Nights and Icewind dale II parts of the site.
But it's back to banner clicking.

@Buck, maybe you're not done with all the flashlink removal, but the "Port Llast" section of the Neverwinter Nights walktrough still requires a flashlink membership. I haven't found any others.
I hope you get the money to keep this site up somehow.

Good luck, and thanks so far.

I'm curious though, what's your plan for getting more revenue Buck?

As I posted in this thread, I am currently contracting a team of people to write an in-house subscription service for GameBanshee. Subscription will not be required to view the site, but subscribers will get perks such as no advertisements, popups, etc and other things such as being able to give themselves custom titles here in the forums. I have some other ideas for incentives as well, but it will be a few weeks until the coding is done, so I'll have to see how everything turns out first.

I fixed the Port Llast section of the NWN walkthrough, so it shouldn't require a Flashlink ID to access anymore. If you find any other areas that are still protected for some reason, let me know.

Wahey - no more Flashlink. I've seldom been more dissapointed about a site that charges money for subscription to webpages, when there hardly are any webpages connected to the program, and most of them aren't even updated much.

You did a good thing stopping work with Flashlink Buck, think GB was only quality site there :)

Hey, Buck,

How is GameBanshee paid by the popups? Is it per view, per click or per purchase?

Buck - my two cents - I would be quite willing to contribute to gamebanshee in the form of a subscription fee. I seem to recall once that you accepted donations via paypal - but maybe I am confusing this site with another one.

Anyway - I would rather send money to you directly than indirectly through flashlink - so I think this is a good move on your part. Heck, I pay $29.95 per year for my PC Gamer subscription - and I use you site and the forums about 10 times as much as this magazine - so I am willing to pay a modest subscription fee - especially if there were some unique perks like....special sigs for the forum, etc. (I am such an elitist scumbag)

Per view, but the popup has to load completely for us to get credit. Another thing that counts against us for the # of popups we display are people who use popup eliminators. I'm considering adding code to the site that will disallow anyone using a popup eliminator from viewing the site, but I really don't know how many people that would affect.

I will hopefully have a working in-house subscription service within the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned.

I do intend to subscribe to Game Banshee when you have the new system set up. :) I just want to mention, though, that some people who block popups do so to prevent potential viruses from attacking their computers. In the past I have ended up with some nasty trojans and viruses following an encounter with a popup blitz. This has also happened to several friends of mine.

@Buck, will subscribers to the new GB be penalized for blocking pop ups too?

I ask because my firewall blocks pop ups for security, I am - for tonight - working briefly without a firewall, and am personally surprised by the number of pop ups on GB. Way more than before Flashlink...

There are actually some Pop-up eliminators that allow certain websites to keep the pop-ups. For instance, I allowed GB pop-ups to continue, in order to continue helping the site, in whichever way I'm able.

No, subscribers would not even see the code that produces popups or checks for a popup blocker. Keep in mind that I have not added any code to penalize popup blockers, yet. Once the new system is up and running (it'll probably be another couple of weeks), I will probably have a test run with the new code before actually committing to using it.

Currently, I'm running 3 different popups and 1 popbehind. Two of the popups and the popbehind run on a 12-hour timer, and the last popup is on a 24-hour timer, so I really don't feel it's any more annoying than the way GameBanshee was before Flashlink. Additionally, all of the different popup codes are separated by 3 pageviews (starting on pageview #2), so you have to view a minimum of 11 pages on the site to even see them all. Therefore, only viewers who spend a considerable amount of time on the site will get hit with all of the popups, and even then will typically only see the four different popups during multiple visits throughout the day. This also ensures that viewers who are visiting to check the news page of their favorite game, a new interview, or some other smaller feature will see a minimal number of popups (possibly even zero).

Sign me up too Buck :)

Just a couple of questions. Are our Flashlink subscriptions still good on Falshlink? (Not that I ever used mine, I have forgotten my password even :D ;) )

I will renew my subscription when you are up with the new system, but for anyone else: If someone has a relatively new Subscription, will that be prorated into the new system, or do we all re-subscribe from day one.

Yes, your current Flashlink subscriptions are good towards any site that is listed as a member at www.flashlink.com. If you are not interested in any of the other sites that are part of the Flashlink network, however, then I highly recommend that you cancel your subscription by emailing support@flashlink.com.
