New to the game, someone help me get started

Post by Stilgar »

Hi,
I just bought Morrowind (heared so much great things about it)
What are good classes/races/skills to start with?
I have no idea what options to pick.
After I answered some questions they suggested the monk class for me, but from my BG experience I don't think this would be the best choice, but it could be totally different in morrowind.
(battle mage sounds kinda cool :D :D )
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

Basically, Morrowind comes down to.... what kind of a character do you -want- to play?

This isn't like the D&D games. You can pretty much make any character master any skill you want them to. Don't worry about making a "bad" choice, because there really aren't any. The only thing you may find is that none of the stock character classes contain the exact mix of skills you want to specialize in (the class skills will advance more quickly then the others will. This is the only effect of being a member of a given class), so you might well prefer to make a custom class. I always do.

Race wise, again, it really comes down to what is it you'd like to play? All the races are balanced, all are good for -something-, none is especially stronger or weaker then the others. Probably the biggest race-specific issue is that neither argonians or khajit can wear boots.

Oh yeah, before I forget, just so you know.... the expansion adds new content, but no new races/classes. So it doesn't matter when you install it.

and the biggest powergaming class is breton with atronach sign...

sigh...you guys knew i was going to say that, right???

 :D

actually i found out with a little mod, any race and sign can be obscenely powerful...

been playing with bun bun, morrowind version, and last night, in celebration of a new plugin i downloaded, i made a breton dunmer atronach character...

yes, its quite simple to combine races...in fact i have successfully combined the benefits from ALL races in one pc...

these days i am trying to cheat my way to faster fps...i remembered from bg2 that removing fog of war resulted in a much faster fps...and been playing with the nortorious "coe" command, just downloaded the infamous surveyer pole and mapping plugin... :D

but hey, you guys knew i would add the powergamer's perspective...hehehhehh

stil, unlike bg or tob, where character profession choice literally makes or breaks the game, choose whatever class sounds the coolest...the race and birthsign are much much more important, in fact the profession is not even worth consideration...

you can become regardless of profession...

heavy armor warrior
heavy armor warrior/mage (my favorite)

stealthy assassin
stealthy assassin with mondo magic

pure magic user
alchemist (seriously overpowered)
sorceror-enchanted devices up the kazoo...my personal vote for the most seriously overpowered class...

i personally go for

stealthy assassin sorceror warrior mage...with mondo heavy armor....

and believe it or not, after you play a while, FASHION will become very important...you actually go for armor that looks cooler rather than does more...strange but true...
They call me Darth...

Darth Gizka!

Muwahahahahhahahha!!!

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

I am playing with the monk class. Every class can be overpowered to the point where you say, "What's the point?" That's half the fun - no one's left out. :)

I will try User's cheese and suggestions after my first run through of the game.

And the expansion...

Yes, Morrowind is fun, it took me a while to get used to it after being spoiled by Bioware, but it's fun.

Like previous postings...there is no "best class"...you can be whatever you want to be, try different combos and see which one works for you, Personally I prefer either the Khajit or the Bosmer. :)

You should take a look at previous threads in the Morrowind forum, and check out the walkthrough presented here at GB.

ps...don't forget all the mods available out there.
Have fun adventuring...

Oh almost forgot.
Welcome to the madhouse.
