Post by Gorgan »

What game do you guys think has the best story line? Im really looking for a good game with a good plot. It can be of any platform and should be farily recent.
Thanks :)

First Person Shooters

Max Payne and Deus Ex. Both fairly old and cheap games by now but very impressive plots.

Planescape: Torment. By "fairly recent," I assume you mean using an engine that's still being played by a lot of people, and still available online for purchase.

I did, too. ;) There are many copies available on the Web. Here's one. If it's gone, soon, just do a search at Amazon. The game regularly shows up there.

Hmmm I found Freelancer pretty fun, had to play it on a friend's computer, due mainly to the computer requirements, but its a pretty cool game, but that is probably not the game you want.

Kings Quest is a fairly cool game if you want that Dungeons knights etc. type of game, and one that should easily be able to play on your system.

I thought the story behind Diablo 2 was good (even though I don't really care for the game). Warcraft and Warcraft 2 had awesome plots, too. Same with Starcraft. :)

In an RPG, I'd say either Icewind Dale (which I enjoyed), Baldur's Gate 2, or Planescape : Torment.

Note heavy sarcasm, and more than a bit of spam...

The best game storyline ever - Quake :D

Check this out for involving and game-related...
You get the phone call at 4 a.m. By 5:30 you're in the secret installation. The commander explains tersely, "It's about the Slipgate device. Once we perfect these, we'll be able to use them to transport people and cargo from one place to another instantly.

"An enemy codenamed Quake, is using his own slipgates to insert death squads inside our bases to kill, steal, and kidnap..

"The hell of it is we have no idea where he's from. Our top scientists think Quake's not from Earth, but another dimension. They say Quake's preparing to unleash his real army, whatever that is.

"You're our best man. This is Operation Counterstrike and you're in charge. Find Quake, and stop him ... or it ... You have full authority to requisition anything you need. If the eggheads are right, all our lives are expendable.."

While scouting the neighborhood, you hear shots back at the base. Damn, that Quake bastard works fast! He heard about Operation Counterstrike, and hit first. Racing back, you see the place is overrun. You are almost certainly the only survivor. Operation Counterstrike is over. Except for you.

You know that the heart of the installation holds a slipgate. Since Quake's killers came through, it is still set to his dimension. You can use it to get loose in his hometown. Maybe you can get to the ******* personally. You pump a round into your shotgun, and get moving.
Until I happened upon this in the manual one day, I had absolutely no idea that Quake was the name of a person, or why I was running around shooting things...but then it doesn't matter :D

Wow! Thank Kam! I never realised there was an actual story along with all that...

@ Gorgan, are you looking for any specific type of game?
If I asked, would you answer? Its your problem. Its a deep, deep problem. I have no way to ask about that... I have no elegant way of stepping into your heart without tracking in filth. So I will wait. Someday, when you want to tell me, tell me then. -Bleach

How about Half-Life? Not an RPG, but definitely a cool game/plot.

Torment is a good bet, and if you have a Media Play near you, it is probably bundled with several other games, all for under US$10. I'd give away my old copy, but I'm hoping for an add on or sequal.

Of course you can't beat Leisure Suit Larry for pure immersive detachment. ;)

I kinda like No One Lives Forever 2 for FPS storylines.

See? I told you. Planescape: Torment. :)

The young ones never listen to me. I told Attila the Hun to stop pushing westwards and open up a lending library, but did he pay attention? Noooooo....

Torment is probably the best game in recent memory that no one bothered to expand upon.

I like The Longest Journey. I'm really hoping there'll be more story about April Ryan and Crow. :)

Starcraft, and the warcraft series have a good story.
I also like the story from IWD2, and let's see.

The stories from Final Fantasy 6,7,8 (and 10) are realy good.
I think that series has the best stories.

Torment.

This game crushes all CRPG rivals in three aspects:
  • Plot
  • Characters
  • Music. Best and most moving musics composed for a game, IMHO

X-Com UFO Defense. Best game I ever played - great story, great squad based stragegy, most immersive and atmospheric game ever IMHO.

Best RP game story can be found in Planescape Torment.
