Trouble going solo

Post by TheGeoff »

I recently started a solo game with an Aasimar Ranger. Problem is In Tagros while trying to clear the docks and fight regular golbins, they are getting a plus 9 to attack me! And this is being flanked or anything. One on one face to face...What in Hades is going on here?!

Also any early advice on solo play would help. My first time trying this out.

A ranger is tough - solo druid is tough enough! Check this thread out: here .

AHA!

heh, I finally figured it out. I had it set on insane difficulty from my previous game when I played a full group. I've reset to Normal and am having no diffuiculty with the first chapter in Tagros..well some minor difficulty...

I had to reload the fight with them guys at the Salty Dog a couple of times...My ranger just was having problems fighting off all 3 of them bastards....My character's charisma is very low...RP reasons ( he is a loner and prefers to be asocial)...Stats at the end of the Targos fight are...

Aasimar level 5 ranger
STR 14 My 2 feats so far are : Iron Will
DEX 18 Luck of Heros
Con 16
INT 14
WIS 14
CHA 5

Dual weilding a longsword and shortsword and using a heavy crossbow for those hidden shots.

Using Phaen's Rags and the ring of Mage armor for an AC of 20.

During the big battle with the goblins i used entagles to slow em down and flaming oils to clear em out when they got bunched up.

I also used a pair of sleep scrolls in the fight against the goblin mage. Those made the fight ALOT easier plus my ability to save versus almost all his spell effects..Blindness still hit me...

After taking out his fallen comrades it was a long battle against the goblin shaman and I recieved Olap's help when I ran by on my way to get healed.

Getting ready to step off Towards the Shaengarn bridge and see what happens....

Okay...

Welp..Im just before the Shaengarne bridge right now. Made level 9. Toughest fight so far were the Orc Shamans with the wererats and werebadgers. Had to reload twice because of failed saves versus hold person (mutter). Ive had 2 entangle spells since level 4 and am gettin mad that I havent got access to level 2 spells yet...With my 21 AC and using dual weild the fights arent that tough. When I take alot of damage I just bactrack to the nearest healer and pay for my healing (Just use cure light wounds, very cheap way ta do it).

Torak was a pushover. Snuck in, saved the peeps. In the fight I placed 2 entagles near the gate and they came at me VEERY SLOOWLY. Didnt have more than 2 on me at a time.

Im beginning to think dual weild is underpowered in this game...I needed to switch to a 2 handed weapon in order to do good damage to the zombies and violet jellies in the troll cave. I Suspect I may have to do this alot more as the enemies become tougher....

Sneaking isnt very good in this game either. It doesnt pay to sneak past opponents because sooner or later you'll be in an area where you have to fight to advance (destroying the bridge) and then the qhole damn map will be upon you....

So basically Im purterbed that rangers are so nerfed. Dual weild and sneaking suck. My only hope is the my level 2 spells (when they come) will kick as much butt as entangle currently does.....

Aasimar level 9 Ranger. STR 15 DEX 18 CON 16 INT 14 WIS 14 CHA 5. FEATS Luck of heroes, Iron will, dodge, power attack.

Uses Phean's Rags and ring of mage armor for defence. Currently weilding scimitar +1 and shortsword +1.

*Note: While the Moonblade is a nice situational weapon it doesnt do critical damage! Just says on the weapon it can't be used for sneak attacks ::Mutter::

OH, the fight with the troll was tough. I had to use all my potions of healing and extra healing and finally sunscorch ta take him down!.

The lone wanderer continues his quest this eve......

I'm having the same problem as you. I tried to solo as an 1/2 orc fighter. I rolled through the game until I got to the screen with the dam. I was faced with 4 or 5 boars, 4 or 5 druids (or something like that) and 2 or 3 big cats. I reloaded the battle about 8 times before I was able to survive. Then I rested for about 30 days to heal. The next battle I ran in to was just as hard so I gave up.

Now I'm playing with a fighter, a fighter/thief, and a fighter/sorcerer. I made it to the same place and I still cannot seem to win this battle. My sorcerer is only level 2 or 3 and I do not have any area effect spells. I think they would make all the difference.

I did find that the NPC that lost the moonblade, will cast Aid on you. It lasts until you get to the screen with the dam.

Good luck.

as i said before: going solo is not good! try importing some charectrs... or try to run the game as a wizard/sorcerer, then yu can SUMMON a fake group (of monsters), though you can't summon a familier...

The battle for Shaengarne bridge

Now this battle was epic for 2 reasons ...

1: I finished the battle without leaving the area to run and get healed by the healer even once!
2: I found out a *super cheese* method of attacking that helped me not leave the area and get healed every few seconds.

Let me explain.

When I first ran into the battle at the bridge I thought i would try and run to the ogres and kill them first. Being hidden at first didnt help because as soon as you enter the area the 'cenematic' happens and by the time its over Im visible and got the baddies breathin down me neck.
Needless to say my first foray didn't end well. Mostly dead because of being surrounded and didnt get to the ogres.
On my second try I decided to just fight the first wave near the bottom of the screen and wipe them out without getting the other squads on me. This worked fine with the help of a couple of entagles and by the end of the initial fight I had 64 hps left of my max of 104.
Here is where it got hard though. I knew I had to take the ogres out first so I hid and snuck all the way to where the ogres were at the end of the bridge. The female mage could see me even hidden though which was annoying and she followed me and started attacking. I was at the far right of the screen and started using the haft axe and throwing at the ogres and ignoring the sorceress. The rest of the baddies on the bridge didnt swarm! I was able to take out the ogres with the throwing axe while the mage hit me with a ton o spells. I made all of my saves though and beat her down. I had to use a couple of my potions of extra healing though.
OK now the bridge was safe but I knew I had to take out all the baddies in the area to finish. Since I still had a few potions left I decided to try and take out the squad on the bridge. I hid and snuck within bow range of an orc archer on the bridge.

(here is where I find the super cheese method)

Well Im in bow range BUT the orc archer is not fully visisble. He is halfway in fog of war and within my sight. I can see him and his red circle but he looks hazy. As I fire my bow at him HE DOES NOTHING! He just stands there and I finally finish him off with a few arrows. I hide and sneak within range of the bugbear. Remembering what happened with the orc archer I maneuver myself to where the bugbear can be fired at but is still hazy. AGAIN IT happens. The bugbear stands there as i slowly plink him to death. I do the other orc archers and the snake and the other bugbears near the bridge. All hazy at edge of sight all die by doing noting.

By this time Im feeling pretty cheezy about this whole thing and i finish off the the other orcs mages and bugbears without using the cheese technique (plus i ran out of arrows). After killing a few more archers I picked up some more arrows and finish off the verbeeg using the *super cheese method*.

Now Im level 10 ranger with secoond level spells and am off to the goblin fortress. I don't know if this *super cheese method* will work everywhere but it will help until I am able to get some speed boots and a regeneration items.

I will have to start a thread on the morality of using the the *super cheese method*

P.S. As far as the guy that keeps telling me to play with a group... Ive already finished the game with a group and it was no problem. Im trying to squeeze a bit of enjoyment out of this turd of a ROLE playing game...hah.
