Okay, need a little suggestion on what to do next. After making it to the city of Baldur's Gate, I kinda got caught up in the Return to Candlekeep quest before I even got to exlore the city. So I'm back in Baldur's Gate, and wanted for murder of course. I've managed to rescue Duke Eltan and taken him to the Harbor master, so far without being caught by a Flaming Fist. I've got all the documents it seem to clear my name and incriminate Sarevok, including an invitation to some ball or something. I'm kinda not sure where to go next. I'm thinking the ball is kinda where it's all leading me, but since I never got to full explore the city, I don't know where that is, and with the Flaming Fist everywhere it's hard to explore.
Any suggestions on my next move, to get me back on the storyline?

To follow the critical path, your next step is to crash Sarevok's coronation at the Ducal Palace. You must prevent Sarevok from killing the Grand Dukes. Otherwise, he will be in full control of the city, and you won't be able to show anyone the evidence you have in your possession because they'll all be dead. (The evidence incriminates Sarevok and proves your own innocence.) If you can show the evidence to a (surviving) Grand Duke, Sarevok will be ruined. There will be more battles, but you can concentrate on winning the game at that point.
The alternative is to make sure you have completed all of the sidequests before you crash the coronation. I don't know which ones you have completeted and which ones you haven't, or which ones are still available if you haven't completed them. You might consult a walkthrough just to see if there are any that you have missed, but I'm not sure what else to tell you.
Good luck!

Palace ball spoilers
Seems that you've got yourself into a bit of a predicament. It's best to explore every bit of the city and avoid any quests until you know your way around it. But that's 20/20 hindsight at this point. If your mage has the clairvoiance spell, now is the time to use it on the unexplored sectors. Travel via the sewers and use a wand of sleep to put guards out without getting your reputation damaged. The palace is in the north central sector and that's your next goal. Present the invitation to the guard and he'll let you in. Good luck, you should be able to pull it off with enough exp points even if you miss out on a few side quests.

Duke Eltan quest advice*spoilers, if needed*
The most Flaming Fist soldiers I've seen is around the headquarters. You can go around the back of the building to avoid them and get in there to
Minor

save Eltan from his sickness. I won't reveal any more details other than that. Hope this helps. Also, just outside you'll meet a person who will act as kind of a mob informant against ol' you-know who (
), whose name I will keep secret for surprises. Hope this helps.
FYI, I beat BG1 with a Paladin about a month ago. It was fun.

Thanks for all the help guys. I was able to crash the party at the Duchal Palace, chase down Sarevok, manage to beat him (finally - took alot of summoned skeleton fodder and some bows and arrows I picked up off skeletons outside lol.... is it possible to stand toe to toe with that guy? My level 7 paladin, Minsc, Ajantis, and Yeslick, with arrows and spell support from Imoen and Dynaheir got their asses handed to them.. fully spell buffed)
And the cool news is that since I'm running the Original Saga version, I was able to go back and do all the pre-finale side quests in the city. Yay!

Yeah, that is kind of what I did too, except I had Khalid and Jaheira instead of Ajantis and Yeslick. Of course, instead of skeletons, I had worgs and gnolls from a wand of summoning, I believe. Also, I didn't bother to deal with Sarevok's assistants either. My main character, armed with the +2 Warhammer, actually delivered the final blow that sent him to kingdom come, to what it looked like on the screen. Gave that pally the credit he deserved.
Minsc I had armed with Spider's Bane (+2 Two-Handed Sword), Khalid with the +2 Long Sword, and Jaheira with the Staff Mace. Imoen kept her distance and pummeled ol' Iron Man with various types of arrows and w/ magic missiles (wand), while Dynaheir launched every spell and sling bullet she had.
Well, congrats, Drayskullan. May that pally of yours kick major arse.

None of my characters has ever been able to stand toe to toe with Sarevok. But the last time I played, he was easier to kill than Semaj (the Mage), mainly because Semaj protects himself with Mirror Image spells. Semaj was also the only one who inflicted any damage on my party (with fireballs, lightning bolts, etc.). All I had to do was backstab Sarevok and the others a few times with a Fighter/Thief who was buffed with a Potion of Cloud Giant Strength and Oil of Speed. She could usually run away and hide in shadows, but when she couldn't, I had her drink Potions of Invisibility. It almost seems cheesy, but Assassins do that all the time in BG2: Shadows of Amn.
