After the asylum bit, you get the choice. I chose to use the portal, but what if I chose to go the other way, would I still be able to get into the Underdark?

Yes, you can still go to the Underdark - and I recommend that you go the other way (not the portal)

yeah, wish I knew that BEFORE I went through the portal ;) But I'm going for it once more, so I'll do it this time
