Yup. About the best Scale Mail that I can think of up to Chpt. 3 is a suit called the Ashen Scales.

You get them from the vampire lair, whether by siding with Bodhi (in which you get it immediately, though miss out on a decent ring and amulet), or by raiding the place as a final task for Aran Linvail (you get the scale mail, a mace, a so-so katana, AND initially have a magic ring and amulet as well ;) )

Still, the choice is all yours.

Not all dragon scale armor is of the same class. The red dragon scale is considered plate, the shade dragon scale is considered either leather or studded leather. In ToB there is blute and white dragon scales that can be made into armor. Ashen Scale armor is made of wyvern scales and can be used by rangers but not thieves (without negating there thieve skills that is) but probably barbarians. White scale can be worn by rangers and thieves and so I would presume by barbarians as well. Blue scale armor cannot be worn by thieves or druids so I would guess the barbarian can't wear it either. Its to bad that the item descriptions aren't more kit specific. You might want to equip your barbarian with every type of armor possible using SK and see what works. Take notes on what you figure out and then delete the SK saved game.

Hold on a minute. I don't remember being able to equip White Dragon Scale Armor on a thief. I thought that it was scale mail armor (remembers it appearing as such when equipped on Sarevok).

Yes, Red and Blue Dragon Scale armor are considered Plate Mail (seemed liked full plate mail when it came to armor class bonuses, IIRC).

White dragon scale armor is classified as splint mail. There is no official 'scale mail' classification - it may say that in the item description but it has to be classified as either plate, chain, splint, or leather. The description says that only mages cannot use it. I'm not sure whether is disables a thief's or ranger's special abilities but I would assume it does. I opened up this item with IEEP and checked the "usability" settings and barbarian is definitely checked off as being able to use it (only Kensai, Monks, Mage/Thieves and Beast Friends cannot use it). The item settings tell the whole story (besides I tested it and my test barbarian could wear the Shadow Dragon Scale, Darkmail and White Scale armor). I also tested it with a pure thief and he was able to wear both the Shadow Dragon Scale and White Dragon Scale armor without disabling his thieving skills.
