What does it mean to be a fan?

Post by Galuf the Dwarf »

Funny, it seems like there's always something in every one person's life that they revere above everything else. Why does it happen? How much does it factor into our lives?

Of course, I have one show that's remained in my heart since I can remember it, and I've hailed it even above the fantasy games that I've played & stories that I've read. Why?
To think, in a time where animated shows were quite a bit about humanoid characters with superhuman powers/feats, what I've enjoyed more is a series about robots with amazing strength, stature, and who change their shape to match vehicles, animals, and other objects of reality (though later on new characters turned into way different things). I grew to love that concept above all, though I didn't appreciate anything that was like it.

Being a fan of a series and/or concept is quite peculiar. You love it so much that it may not just go into your head, but into your blood as well. Gary Gygax was a fan of board games and fantasy, and from his mind came Dungeons & Dragons. Ed Greenwood turned his growing interest in D&D and fantasy into the Forgotten Realms universe.

What else can you all say to this?
Dungeon Crawl Inc.: It's the most fun you can have without 3 midgets and a whip! Character stats made by your's truly!

Regarding sci-fi/fantasy:

Why do we revere something above everything else in life? Not only because we humans always seem to need something to believe in, but because if we didn't have somthing to fuel our imagination, something that inspires us, than we could not and would not put our greatest asset forward. The essence of creativity. For me, Star Wars is something I've always loved above most other shows or games or whatever. It's not because it's particularily better than any of the rest, it's just that there's something in it that attracts me and makes me want to dream in its world. Different things inspire different people. Plus, if we didn't have fantasy or sci-fi worlds to entertain us, life would get pretty boring wouldn't it?

I mean, if you think about it, the influx of imagination only began during the Renaissance, when the world was moving out of sustinance farming and more into luxury. And with luxury comes spare time to think. And when one thinks, he often imagines "wouldn't it be great if..." or "I'd love to do...." and if he or she had access to materials, he or she could create new technology. And while some put their thoughts into machines and the like, others created literature. For the first time, stories explored different realms other than Earth. These tales would fascinate the folk back then. See, without comfort, without a world where survival is everything, humans tend to imagine and dream. With dreams comes a desire to see something that's not of this world. And that is why we love shows that are unlike anything in the real world. To fulfill our imagination.

It's a pity that nowadays creativity is somewhat repressed by the ritualistic exams, schools, and degrees. You always need "this" so "that" can happen. And if you don't have "this" too bad. That explains why it seems that some dreams may never come true.

Er......I'll just go back into my dark corner now. Enough ranting for the next year and a bit

Well, you have to think that some people do create a lot, and do consume a lot of scififantasy, because they tend to sell better (en mass and over a long period of time) than most fiction.

I think its a matter of not seeing as many people who are "creating" in the manner of Gygax, etc, because there is so much "noise" out there in terms of product, and there are so many "steps" to take that those who are creating (say, videogame designers) are often hidden behidn a company name.
