Never ask other members "Who is the best NPC?". It really varies, and you'll miss out finding it by yourself...
I agree. It's also a mistake to ask other people, "What kind of character should I play?" On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with asking, "Tell me a little about the NPCs," or "What are the pros and cons of the various classes?" Answers to such questions can help individual players sraw their own conclusions.
I also agree with the point you made about "finding it by yourself". I don't like using guides and walkthroughs because they spoil the game and take away much of the fun. I want to feel like I'm "really there", trying to figure things out on my own. As I mentioned earlier, the game contains plenty of clues, and as far as I'm concerned, you might as well read
them instead of reading a walkthrough.
I've taken a look at several walkthroughs, and with all due respect, I think they obscure the plot instead of enlightening it. "Go here, do this, then go here and do this, etc.," has a tendency to make people's brains turn off, making it harder to grasp what is going on in the story. If you keep track of events and characters on your own and actually
think about them, you'll understand them a lot better. I think the storyline is one of the best things about the game, and I want to enjoy the storyline as much as possible. But if people want to use walkthroughs, it's fine with me.

Iif people need help with a particular quest or a particular encounter, I think it's a good idea to ask questions in a forum like this, but I prefer to help them figure things out on their own rather than spelling it all out for them.

Unlike BG2, there's no particular interactions between NPCs in this game...
Actually, there are a few interactions between the NPCs. The manual mentions the Harpers and the Zhentarim, and you might be able to guess that Harpers and Zhents don't get along. The manual also mentions the Red Wizards, and you can probably guess that if you have a Red Wizard in your party, he or she won't get along with other Mages. It's also common for some of the NPCs to make disparaging remarks about other NPCs (although the interaction is limited to that), ranging from (paraphrased), "You're a sorry example of our race" to "I'd prefer that you stand downwind from me".
I also agree that players should save their game frequently, and not just Quick Saves. There's no limit to the number of saved games you can have. I recommend saving each time you finish a quest and embark on the next and giving it a descriptive name like "Finished Firewine" or something like that. You can copy saved game files to floppies, CDs, or other directories on your hard drive and transfer them from one machine to another. You can also convert single-player games to multi-player games just by moving them from one directory to another. Just remember that if you have a lot of saved games in your SAVE directory (say, more than 50), it will take a noticeably longer tie to load and save games, so you should clear out your SAVE directory once in a while if you have a lot of saved games. (Copy them to floppies or CDs or move them to other directories if you want to keep them.)
