Welcome to GameBanshee!

Welcome to the GameBanshee forums, tutone. Good job on taking out ol' Tarnesh there. Still, prepare to get more intense battles as the game progresses. ;)

From here, you might as well go inside the inn, if you're looking to inquire the help of those two friends Gorion spoke of. Between them and whoever else you may be with (if you picked up Xzar & Montaron), you will know where to go from there.

If you need more help from there, feel free to speak up. I won't lose sleep over it (hopefully, not too much) if you need further advice.

Like Galuf said, enter the inn, and meet up with some friends of Gorion. From there follow the story line.
Talk with everyone taht has a name you meet on your way. And try to help everyone that wants to.

Also some other tips:
- Quicksave often
- The journal isnt very clear, so have a good memory or write things down
- Quicksave more
- Differnt tactics can often change the faith of battle.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask

[EDIT] And Welcome to Gamebanshee

Gorion said that you should go to the Friendly Arm Inn and meet his two old friends, Khalid and Jaheira. (That's not a "spoiler", is it?) :) You should at least talk to them even if you don't want them to join your party. They will give you advice about where you should go next.

As you might be aware (everyone is talking about it), there's a big iron shortage. Your character is an adventurer, so why don't you take the hint and try to do something about it? :) As Khalid and Jaheira will tell you, you should go to Nashkel (where the mines are located) and talk to the mayor. Don't be afraid to stop in Beregost and talk to people there, but try not to get too sidetracked unless you know where you're going.

Lots of people you talk to will give you clues abut what you should do or where you can go to find adventure. You'll hear some of them talk about Firewine, the Ulcaster School, etc. If you don't feel like talking to everybody (it can get tedious), you can simply go from one area to the next looking for monsters and treasure. (Be sure to look for doors, traps, etc.) The main thing you need to be aware of is that there's a difference between the "critical path" (the main plot) and "sidequests". "Sidequests" (such as Firewine and Ulcaster) have no relation to the main plot, and you can do them whenever you feel like it. In contrast, the main plot is divided into chapters; to get from one chapter to the next, you have to complete the main quests. For example, once you solve the mystery in Nashkel, you'll learn about a new mystery you need to solve, and so on. Usually, you'll get clues that are pretty specific. "Talk to the mayor in Nashkel; then go to the mines; then go to...your next stop. :) You get the idea. :)

You also need to be aware that the game uses timers, so it's important to do certain things in a timely manner. For example, if you tell an NPC who joins your party that you're going to do something they want you to do, they will complain (and possibly turn on you) if you haven't finished the quest in about ten days (a "tenday"). You can use your journal to help you keep track of your assignments, or better yet, don't try to do too many things at once. You'll get the hang of it, but there's a lot to keep track of.

I don't know how much you know about the game, but you need to give some thought to your party composition. How many NPCs do you want in your party? (There are 25 NPCs to choose from.) Which skills do you want them to have? You also need to take alignment into consideration. For example, if you're playing a Good character and you want to attain a high Reputation, don't expect Evil or even Neutral NPCs to be happy in your party. Their complaining can be very annoying. Jaheira is especially annoying even when she's not unhappy, which brings up another issue: which of the NPCs do you enjoy listening to? Lots of people like Minsc because he's so funny, and he certainly has a lot of gusto. Also keep in mind that some of the NPCs come in pairs. For example, Khalid and Jaheira are a couple, and if you kick one of them out of your party, the other one will leave as well. There are ways to get around that if you want to keep one of them and ditch the other, but certain dialogues might not work correctly if the game expects both of them to be in the party (in which case, you might meet Biff the Understudy). It's always best to avoid problems and choose the party you like the most; the only problem is making up your mind. :)

1) Read gamebanshee's NPC guide
2) Use quickslot AND more than 1 saveslots when entering no-town area. Save every second time in the other slot and so on :P

Welcome to GameBanshee, tutone. :)

My advice is: Never ask other members "Who is the best NPC?". It really varies, and you'll miss out finding it by yourself. Unlike BG2, there's no particular interactions between NPCs in this game. Only thing you need to think is 1. pair NPCs (as VonDondu mentioned), and 2. the Evil aligned NPC will be angry when your reputation hits really high and Good aligned NPC hates being in low reputation group.

Save often with both quick save and proper save, maybe each chapters, just in case.

Most important thing is, ENJOY! :)

I agree. It's also a mistake to ask other people, "What kind of character should I play?" On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with asking, "Tell me a little about the NPCs," or "What are the pros and cons of the various classes?" Answers to such questions can help individual players sraw their own conclusions. :)

I also agree with the point you made about "finding it by yourself". I don't like using guides and walkthroughs because they spoil the game and take away much of the fun. I want to feel like I'm "really there", trying to figure things out on my own. As I mentioned earlier, the game contains plenty of clues, and as far as I'm concerned, you might as well read them instead of reading a walkthrough.

I've taken a look at several walkthroughs, and with all due respect, I think they obscure the plot instead of enlightening it. "Go here, do this, then go here and do this, etc.," has a tendency to make people's brains turn off, making it harder to grasp what is going on in the story. If you keep track of events and characters on your own and actually think about them, you'll understand them a lot better. I think the storyline is one of the best things about the game, and I want to enjoy the storyline as much as possible. But if people want to use walkthroughs, it's fine with me. :) Iif people need help with a particular quest or a particular encounter, I think it's a good idea to ask questions in a forum like this, but I prefer to help them figure things out on their own rather than spelling it all out for them.

Actually, there are a few interactions between the NPCs. The manual mentions the Harpers and the Zhentarim, and you might be able to guess that Harpers and Zhents don't get along. The manual also mentions the Red Wizards, and you can probably guess that if you have a Red Wizard in your party, he or she won't get along with other Mages. It's also common for some of the NPCs to make disparaging remarks about other NPCs (although the interaction is limited to that), ranging from (paraphrased), "You're a sorry example of our race" to "I'd prefer that you stand downwind from me". :)

I also agree that players should save their game frequently, and not just Quick Saves. There's no limit to the number of saved games you can have. I recommend saving each time you finish a quest and embark on the next and giving it a descriptive name like "Finished Firewine" or something like that. You can copy saved game files to floppies, CDs, or other directories on your hard drive and transfer them from one machine to another. You can also convert single-player games to multi-player games just by moving them from one directory to another. Just remember that if you have a lot of saved games in your SAVE directory (say, more than 50), it will take a noticeably longer tie to load and save games, so you should clear out your SAVE directory once in a while if you have a lot of saved games. (Copy them to floppies or CDs or move them to other directories if you want to keep them.)

I think Von Dondu's referring to Xzar and Montaron.

SPOILERS

Yes, I was referring to the two characters you might have met on the way to the Friendly Arm Inn, Xzar and Montaron. They belong to the Zhentarim. Like Khalid and Jaheira, they want to investigate the iron shortage and will direct you to talk to the mayor of Nashkel. They don't like Harpers, and Harpers don't like them.

Xzar's bio at least mentions of his involvement with the Zhentarim (and speculation that's he's half-crazed because of it).

Well next go to Nashkal and solve the crisis (make sure you pick up the scrolls in the chest and Mulayheys holy symbol). Also i think you should go save Dynaheir from the gnolls (south west). You can pick up Minsc which is good.

Also go to Beregost to the Jovial Juggler and speak witht the flaming fists. Also when you finish the Nashkal mines go near the general store and inn and a guy will fight oyu. Then kill him and go to Beregost and go to the inn into middle west.
