Scrolls and Portions

How do I know the scrolls and items are identified/unidentified? In BG, it will have a desc. of UNIDENTIFIED. Moreover, how to know what are the scrolls and portions are for? I have several potions/scrolls which are just "Magic Portions" or "Scrolls" with different color. What does different color of the scrolls/portions represenate?
