I recently downloaded some really beautiful faces as a plugin and would like to change my ugly old character to one of the new ones... is it possible to do this using the console?

Yes.
ENABLERACEMENU on console.
Although it's ok in most cases be sure you have backup copy, just to be on the safe side.
