Can you read diaries and letters?

I find diaries and letters in some cases and I dont know how to read them or if you even can read them. I snuck in and stole the diary from the guy in the moathouse. I have heard someone say that you can use it to get the temple of elemental evil marked on your map. I didnt kill the guy cus i didnt want the temple to be mad at me as I plan on doing mission for the head guy (I hear you can do missions for him.)

yes you can, move the item to be read to the use item icon in the inventory screen, that would be the one next to the drop item button.
