Myself as a cleric
I've pretty much always started myself as a fighter, but now I just thought of something. Branwen (the only good cleric in the game) is quite...not good, so why don't I just make myself a cleric???
Any pro's and con's for this? I don't want the evil cleric and yeah well...Branwen isn't as good as she COULD be and I hate multiclassing!

I finished the game with cleric once. I was chaotic neutral halfling. I dont remember my stats but they were something like this:
str 18 (19 tome)
cot 15 (16 tome)
dex 18
int 10
wis 17 (19 tomes..)
cha 18 (21 with tome and cloak)
and my party I had:
Kivan
Coran
Montaron
Xzar
I never had anyone else in my party so I leveled up with 4 people quite fast. I managed to beat the game very easily, in the end I had all ppl maxed.

Well i think a dwarf F/C is quite good
But a human Fighter Dualed to CLeric works best.
I clocked the game W/
Fighter/Cleric (Human)
Imoen - Conjurer/Thief
Coran
Montaron
Kagain
Quyale
- I find Quyale quite useless in the end so i changed 2 Safana
My guy who had the most kills was...
CORAN- over 300 kills

I personally like Branwen and always keep her to the end, but single class cleric is pretty good in BG1, considering the variety of NPC warriors in the game. They also have advantage of multiple tomes of Wisdom in BG1 (which you can give to any characters, not just PC).
It also depends on if you are intend to export your character to BG2. Fighters class is the most flexible to dual class, in my opinion.
My favourite PC which I created with the intention of export, was Mage/Cleric multi, actually. With 19 INT and 21 WIS after using tomes, she was a spell caster extraordinaire who can melee as well. It was hard early in the game, but worth the try.

If your talking about BG1, it doesn't matter that Minsc has the boots of speed. They only influence the walking speed.

Oh I know but Minsc was able to get to my enemies and hack them up before my archers could even get in range. And after each kill he ran after the next guy so he was usually the first guy attacking most of my enemies.

I have another opinion on clerics:
I now have a new game with a Dwarf Fighter/Cleric who has great stats. He has decent thaco, good saving throws, good Hp and he regenerates. Halflings are useless as clerics, gnomes and half elves are useless too. Elves are pretty good with their immunity 2 charm and sleep. Humans can be made 2 be strong fighter/Clerics but Dwarfs are best. Also you don't really need mages. Just clerics and druids and fighters.
I reccomend for a GENERAL good party take
P.C Dwarf Fighter/Cleric
Kagain-Best melee fighter
Coran}
Kivan } both are best bowman
Jaheira} with call lightning she is GOOD
Imoen } dual to mage or keep as archer
OR:
P.C Dwarf fighter/cleric
Kagain
Coran
Kivan
Yeslick- he has good stats and can fight well
Imoen
Clerics are very good in Baldurs Gate because you get great fighters and mages and thiefs but crap clerics. Though Jaheira and Yeslick aren't too shabby.
Also Tiax may be psyco pick him up. He has a great ability 2 summon ghasts or gould dunt remember which but i used him once and he was damn good in battle.
BTW- I think Minsc is a crap fighter- low dex and cons, int, wis, chr and crap lore. Always get charmed.

Why not?? What has Viconia ever done to you??
Viconia is definitely the best cleric in BG1, 2 and ToB. And if it's her evil that worries you... well, eventually you can have a good influence on her.

EUhm, Jaheira isn't to bad, but she has complete crappy stats for a druid.
It's nice she has call lightning, but it won't help you in the final battle or in Durlags Tower.
A mage like the gnome illusionist or something like that (Gnome's in Robes of Archmagi look cool ) can really power cast later in the game. While my clerics usualy don't do anything better then cast healing spells and fight.
The last time I played BG1 Me and Edwin both had more kills then Kivan. (Who rocks with bracers of archery)
Owh, and minsc never gets charmed with me, as nothing says spelldisruption like 5 magic missiles flying at a mage.
(Well, except for 10 magic missiles. )
Just my two cents

I'm using the awesome bg1tutu mod and playing thorugh the game again with what is rapidly becomming my favorite party of all time:
Hagbok Forgeslayer: Dwarf Fighter/Cleric
STR 18/67 DEX 17 CON 19 INT 3 WIS 18 CHA 16
Whatever your opinion of min/maxing, you cannot dispute the fact that this guy kicks butt. Especially when you consider the fact that he saves me the trouble of including a lame cleric NPC. Well, Viconia isn't all bad, but this guy is a much more effective use of a character slot!
After tomes, his stats should be:
STR 19 DEX 18 CON 20 INT 3 WIS 21 CHA 17
My favorite weapon so far is the Warhammer +2. Don't let the 1d4 base damage disuade you, this weapon is AWESOME. 1d4+2 is roughly equivalent to the 1d6+1 of +1 flails and maces, although the +2 does give better THAC0, but in addition to that this hammer does +1 electrical damage!! Insanely powerful for disrupting spells through stoneskin and other types of resistances to normal damage.
I know dwarfs with warhammers is cliche, but how many times have you actually roleplayed this? Its VERY fun to watch, especially alongside Kagain and his axe:
Kagain: Plain Fighter
With bracers of dexterity, he makes the perfect frontliner and companion to my PC. Both have 20 CON and regenerate over time. Since they are my two frontliners and take 95% of all damage, this really cuts down on the amount of healing spells I have to memorize, which allows my cleric to do other things like dispel magic, in turn freeing the mages to memorize more offensive spells.
Kivan: Archer kit
This guy gets about 50% of all kills. Simply an amazing sniper.
Coran: Fighter/Theif
Drizzt's Chainmail+4 to allow him to use theiving skills.
I just recently got to Cloakwood and swapped him in for Safana so I haven't had much of a chance to see him in action yet, but I'm guessing he's going to be almost as effective as Kivan, with plenty of theiving to boot..
Imoen: Swashbuckler(5)/Mage(X)
Good old immy with the light crossbow of speed and bracers of archery. In major battles where she takes off her Shadow Armor Studded Leather+3 to don a mage robe, the bracers get passed to either Coran or Kivan. She also uses short swords in a pinch, and gets short sword specialization because she's a swashbuckler. Cool perks for a character that is mostly a mage.
She also handles Find traps, which frees Coran to concentrate more heavily on locks, pockets, and stealth (I choose this path because Imoen starts out with 50% in find traps, whereas Coran starts with close to zero).
I like this 'new' Imoen so much, I think I am gonna give her the tome of +1 Int and shadowkeeper all her stats into BG2.
Edwin: Sorceror kit
With the Ring of Wizardry and his Amulet combined, this guy's arsenal of 16 chromatic orbs and identify spells is a force to be reckoned with ;-)
Hagbok Forgeslayer: Dwarf Fighter/Cleric
STR 18/67 DEX 17 CON 19 INT 3 WIS 18 CHA 16

Ok first of all, I dont think Chromatic orb is the best spell. IMO the best lvl 1 spell is Sleep. Second, I think party of 6 characters level up way too slow, you might consider dropping one or two of them out.
The problem is that the people with the most ridiculous ideas are always the people who are most certain of them.
Nah, I would take 10 characters if the engine allowed it. Its just more fun, and I can handle leveling up slowly. I'm a Fighter(6)/Cleric(6) now headed into cloakwood and playing on the hardest difficulty with no problems whatsoever.
Please distinguish between choosing a good party of 5-6, and choosing a good party of 4 or less. There are different considerations!
As a sorceror, Edwin does have 16 magic missiles, chromatic orbs, identifys, or sleeps availeable to him at any time. I'm just partial to the orb, and I generally depend on the level 2 spell horror instead of sleep, since sleep doesn't seem to work so well on higher level enemies.
