HELP! Using the Tab key to highlight usable objects.

I'm noticing that sometimes, usually in buildings when I press the Tab key to highlight items I'll see a little blue dot on the ground or under some NPC's feet but I can't pick it up, or even find it searching. Is this just a bug or am I doing something wrong here. It's driving me nuts because I feel like I'm overlooking items that could otherwise be useful. Please help me with this! I can find nothing in this forum or in the walkhrough to explain this...

Apparently the blue dot is just a ****-up (one of many in this game, as we all know). It drove me mad, too.
