I think a sorc is prob better if you are going to solo because of the large amount of spells he can cast. A mage is best used in a party because he can be kept at the back and cast supporting spells.

As for the level ten spells you can check them out here: http://www.gamebanshee.com/baldursgatei ... velten.php

By the time you get to level 10 spells you will know what is good to get. Improved Alarcy is good for massive rapid casting(like casting 10 magic missles all at once). Dragon's Breath is good for massive damage.
Flying Walrus.....
Giant Potato.....
Enlarged Eyelash..... ;)
Hairy Wooden Toothbrush..... :D
Yakburger..... :o
Yellow Ticklestick..... :p

The sorceror is best if you know the game and the spells.

Let's venture into the boring world of comparison, shall we?

While the mage choses spells to memorize and can therefore cast difrent spells after every rest, a sorceror choses their spells at levelup and does not memorize new ones, but does not need to rely on the right selection of spells.
A mage might get killed if he forgets to memorize a Lower Resistance, but if a sorceror remembered to pick this spell at last level, he/she can cast it, asuming he/she has at least one spell level left. But if a sorceror did not chose the spell at last level, he/she is screwed.
While a mage can reload and memorize the spell, a sorceror has to avoid this creature until the next level(s).

So it really is up to you. If you think you know the right spells to pick, a sorceror is IMO superior (not by much).

But if you like to experiment and cast difrent spells a mage is what you need.

Something else to consider: the Wild Mage. This is a kit added to ToB. In exchange for a degree of chaos in casting, one gets far more powerful effects. Personally, I think it's a great deal of fun, and makes for wonderful roleplaying; but it's up to you.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

also a sorceror can really take advantage of spells that really magnify their effectiveness when cast more than once...for example, a sorceror can easily spell sequencer a triple remove magic, however a mage must plan for that the last time he or she rests...

but IHateUsernames is completely right...a sorc must be planned and planned most carefully... :p :p :p
