Questions about Custome Portraits, Sound sets, and character models

Post by Galuf the Dwarf »

From what I've been hearing in this forum and Baldur's Gate 2, custom sound sets & portraits sound nifty. When it comes to IWD2, I got inscenced.

1) Are any special programs required to put these in the game? I heard something about having to put them into a certain directory in the game's folder, but overall, I feel in need of some enlightenment.

2) How difficult would it be to make an entire array of character voice sounds? In this case, I'm was hoping to get various quotes from certain characters (about 12 in all) of a certain 80s action cartoon (which Stilgar is familiar with).

3) If I do add custom portraits into the game, will the character's model adjust its colors to that of some of the colors of the portrait, or will I have to change those colors to my liking? I was curious about this.

Overall, any help is welcome.

1) just put the portraits in the c:\...\black isle\icewind dale 2\portraits directory, and you will be able to access them from the character generation screen.

2) have no idea

3) not gonna happen

Thanks Mirk.

Thanks for your help Mirk, but I still need to know about the sound sets at this point.

Can anyone else answer #2?

Well, that link that Tobias provided had guidelines for making custom portraits, sound sets, and (unless it was just about setting them) AI scripts. I'm still guessing as how to get my screen caps (which will consist of character profile shots) and sound sets. If I knew how to somehow capture the quotes I'm looking for, and then get them into the folder as directed by the site, I'd be estatic. Hope that won't require special software.

BTW, the link is just to the custom sound set page, but there's a link on the left-hand side of the page that will let you access the custom portrait page. ;)

Custom sounds

Hello everybody
I only tried once to create custom sounds, but:
1. It takes a very long time
2. My sound doesn't fit for a dwarf fighter with bloody rage :D
It's not an easy job.
One character has got 43 sound events, like being hit, or attack an enemy. If you want to create your own sounds, you must record them with a recorder program (like the windows's sound recorder)

Forty-three sounds which are uttered upon certain actions or conditions can be recorded for each character. These .WAV files should be 22 kHz, 16-bit mono sounds. The format for each sound name is XXXXX00.wav where the Xs can be replaced by a name of up to 5 characters maximum such as Julie or Jason. The final numbers of each sound's name indicates which action/condition it represents as listed in the table below.

The sound set can be selected either in character creation or from the Customize button on the Character Record page. You can have multiple sound sets and chose the one you want the character to use from a list. A play button is available so you can cycle through each sound set to hear what they are.

In the 'Sounds' folder located in the directory in which Icewind Dale II is installed in, you will need to create a new folder that is used to store your new character sounds. The new folder can be up to 32 characters in length. This folder will be displayed in the game as one of the voice set options.
