Vhailors Helm - Possible Spoiler

Post by davfra »

I have a Vhailors Helm and I don`t know how to use it. I`ve looked in the manual and there`s no mention of it. I`ve searched here and can`t find any clear instructions on the correct proceedure to use it. I have one restoration spell and I need to use it but that will leave me without any cover against vampires (I`m in the asylum). I also have 2 simulcan spells which I`m not sure how to use.
Any help, please?
Cheers

I think that you use the use item button just to left of your quick items.

@davfra: When you wear Vhailor's Helm (or any other special ability items, such as amulets and rings, or even some weapons), click the button in bottom of the main screen which looks like a handbag. There're list of spells available from items you are wearing, so chose one you want and cast like spells.

I'm not sure about what do you mean by "one restorations spell to use but that will leave you without cover against vampires". Could you explain a bit?

Do you have Simulacrum spells memorized, or have the scrolls? You need to be a mage/sorcerer (or have a mage/sorcerer, such as Imoen, in your party) to use the scroll. If you have scrolls, use them like wands; place them in quick item slot and cast from the main screen.

Hope they help. :)

I have two simulcrum spells and I have Imoen in my party.
What I`m asking is what do you use these spells and Vhailors Helm for and how do you do it?
I mentioned having only one restoration spell because I thought that the simulcrum spells and helm are capable of copying something.
I know how to make the items active, but not what to do next.

Last time I checked, Vhailor's Helm was kind of buggy, so save before you try it. I attempted to use it on Aerie. Sure enough, the Simulacrum spell appeared as an object-related spell down in the area of the interface bar meant for that purpose, but the spell wouldn't activate--I was told it appeared to fail on a spell save. In other words, my party members were interpreting the spell as an attack. I had both the official and the Baldurdash patches in place.

As the spell description implies this spell makes a duplicate of the caster. The double can be moved about and cast most memorized spells (subject to the 60% limitation) and use scrolls or wands in its quickslots or the magical abilities of equipped items (like Ring of the Ram, etc). Here is the description of the spell.

Simulacrum (Illusion/Phantasm)
Level: 8
Range: 0
Duration: 1 round/level
Casting Time: 9
Area of Effect: Special
Saving Throw: None

A duplicate of the caster is created when this spell is cast. The duplicate is almost identical to the caster, making the duplicate a very powerful ally. The simulacrum is created at 60% of the level at which the caster is currently on. It has all the spells and abilities that the caster would have at that level. It also has 60% of the hit points of the caster. The simulacrum is fully under the control of the caster.

The beauty of Vhailors Helm is that a fighter can wear it and cast a double of himself giving you and extra fighter until it is killed or the spell wears off.

SPOILER:

Put hard to get scrolls (Protection from Magic is a classic one) in the fighter's quickslot. Use the Helm to cast Simulacrum. Click on the Simulacrum Fighter and have the Simulacrum use the quickslot scroll on the real fighter/caster or anyone else for that matter. This way the scroll will not be used up as only the Simulacrum's copy is used not the real copy. This is great for fighting lichs, mindflayers, umberhulks, etc.

One of the most powerful items in the game, if properly (ab)used.

The 60% thing doesn't apply. It's 50%, unless you're dual classed, in which case you're off better (the earlier you dualled, the "more better" you're off).

One use for Restoration in combination with this item is casting it on the clone. It's actually a level drained copy of the caster. Restoring its levels will give it more hit points, THAC0 and possibly attacks. If the caster is a good warrior, it might pay off.
