saving cavanaugh

Is there any way to repair your rep concerning making cavanaugh a begger? If you get him to join your party, will the town forgive you?

I made Otello a beggar, and even though I gave him tons of gold and he and his family are ok, the town still hates me. Oh well, Nulb likes me.

After "ruining" him financially, I allowed Cavanaugh to join my party for a while. I went out and got in several fights, earned him a level or two, and returned to town. As soon as I went to the blacksmith to sell stuff, Cavanaugh said something (I think it was something like "What am I doing HERE!") and ran off. I couldn't find him anywhere after that. I never told him to leave the party, he just took off with everything he had been carrying. The rep stuck, and everybody in town hates me.
