Low or no damage with my longsword

I'm playing a paladin Lev. 5 with weapon proficiency and focus in longswords and an 18 strength (+4).
I was fighting some Gnolls on the first level on the Temple and I kept getting 0-4 damage totals on them. Is this a function of the Gnolls armor or is my computer rolling that low alot? They are hiting me and getting 7-11 alot and I'm wearing brest plate armor. My dwarf fighter seems to do well 4-8 with his ax and
STR. 17(+3).
Maybe I don't understad armor in the 3.5 version and the manual doesn't help. Or it might just be a run of bad rolls. Please help if you can.

I believe the gnolls you are fighting have damage reduction 5/bludgeoning

Switch on the rolls history screen.

Click on the blue hyperlink that says" XXX does 0 damage to gnoll"

This way youa re bale to find out what kind of damage reduction opponents have.

The rolls history screen is essential later on in the game.
