Hi ppl! Can anyone help with these?
1) Does the druid or rangers animal companion give bonuses to the character like a familiar or is it just for fighting? Do they die easily, a chicken against whatever is in the ToEE doesn't seem like much of a fight?
2) I just had on of my people marry meleny and she only 2HP!! Is this a fluke and should i reload or is she really that weak?
3) Is it me or is the crossbow an terrible weapon, I have two charcters who use and they never seem to hit?
4) Is there anyway to find out the god, alignment and stats of a NPC you hire, like by talking, or should i just guess?
Thnx for any answers!

some answers/ideas:
1.) Animal companions are pretty much only for combat. They do not give any bonuses, and, Yes, they die pretty easily.
2.) Meleny starts off at level 1, but I don't remember her being THAT low on HP. If you take her out and get her a couple of levels she should be a little better off. She still refuses to share loot though; even with her husband. I got her up to level 3 and then dropped her off back in town. It was getting a bit too deadly for her out in the "real" world.
3.) No particular weapon is really good or bad. It all depends on your characters melee and ranged attack bonuses. These bonuses depend on your level, character class, and strength or dexterity bonus. Ranged weapons like the crossbow are better in the hands of somebody with a high dexterity. Melee weapons are better in the hands of somebody with a high strength. The only real downside of a crossbow is that it takes part of your turn every round to reload it. I prefer a longbow or a shortbow. No reloading time is required for those two.
4.) I never found a way to determine this before they join your party (unless they mention it in conversation).
I hope that helps.

Thnx alot for your help Keill.
When a companion dies you can summon a new one cant you? Or at least is there a way to keep them out of the battle?
I've decided to keep Meleny (for the moment at least) and give her a chicken (she is a farm girl after all). Both people using crossbows have a good dex but I guess as I haven't left Hommlet let they havent really had a chance! (Just butchered a few villagers and reloaded)
Even when they join up with me most of the character sheet is blank, I found out you can guess at stats from the skills page but it would be nice to see what alignment people had.

All the wisdom NPC I find in the game are terrible, even the level 9 druid is barely acceptable...make sure your group have decent wisdom department, the fighting and the casting can be handle with the NPCs even if you have none yourself(or the minimum).
The animal companion get slightly better with your levels, but it is still more funny then really usefull. A brown bear beside your level 9 group is...entertaining at best!
Melany is a farmer and a dreamer, if you take her, do it for roleplay only, but it is soooo limited compare to baldur gate, dont bother with her.
Althought, if you are really chaotic(not evil), you might get satisfaction in letting her die, then Raise her from the deads to see her walk around with 1/1 HP!!!! I mean, the chicken she can summon certainly look mean to her!!!
