How does sneak attack work?

im making a scoundrel/guardian character, and i read that if you get stun enemies then sneak round the back, u get extra dammage, but i thought you needed to be invisable to do it.
Could somone explane to me how it works?

You could either attack from behind (or side, I believe) or have your enemies immobilized (using for example Stun or grenades) or attack from Stealth Mode, in order for the Sneak Attack to work.
