Cannot get fireballs from Jaer (NPC) after he leaves

After i fetched Jaer from the temple to Hommlet, he thanked the party and said something about giving us the fireballs since he has nothing else to offer. Problem is i can't seem to take them from Jaer's inventory screen, keep saying "NPC would not give this item". This screen only appears when i hit "I" for inventory the moment Jaer leaves. After i hit any of my main party members' inventory, Jaer's inventory screen is not accessible anymore.

I have already patch version 1.0 long ago. Please help and advise, thanks.
