Not physically, but when I rebooted the computer, they didn't show up in My Computer. So I went into the System properties, and got these two error codes:
For my DVD-ROM:
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
For my CD-RW drive:
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
My BIOS is up to date, and I've tried reinstalling the drivers for both devices, but none of that has worked. I also tried to reinstall my motherboard chipset drivers, but that doesn't work either. I disabled System Restore on my PC, so there's no way I can rollback, and I don't have a backup copy of my registry. So the only thing I can see is formatting and re-installing windows, but because my CD-RW drive is not working, I have no way of backing up the 2 gigs of personal data that I have on my disk. So you see my predicament here.
I am using Windows XP Professional with SP1, a VIA KT400 motherboard, and the latest bios. I have no clue what to do, so I would appreciate your help.
My DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives are gone

Did you by any chance remove some CD-writing software?
