I'm confused about the mighty cleaving enchantment. It is supposed to add an additional cleave for a character that has the cleave feat. Does this basically just amount to an extra attack?
Let's say my fighter with the cleave feat hits an opponent with his mighty cleave enchanted weapon and kills the foe. He will get another attack on another foe in range because he has the cleave feat. If he kills the second foe, does he get another attack? Moreover, if he doesn't kill the second foe, does he still get an extra attack?
The 3E DMG says that the weapon with mighty cleaving gives a person with the cleave feat an extra cleav attempt, but that they may only have one extra cleave attempt per round.
Okay, but wouldn't a weapon with mighty cleaving be useless (redundant) for a character who has great cleave since this character will get as many cleaves as possible - rather than being limited to one extra cleave attempt per round?
I just feel like I'm missing out on something here or overlooking something. But it may just be because I can't imagine a fighter taking cleave but passing up on great cleave when it becomes available (so why waste money and xp enchanting a weapon with mighty cleave).
Can somebody confirm or deny my understanding of this?
Thanks.
mighty cleaving and great cleave question
re: Cleaving
Personally ithink Great Cleave is a total waste, is't not very often that you'll down more than 2 opponents in a combat round.
Either the monsters are to weak to bother with, or the Cleaver must stay out of the fight until the mages are done.
I find this truth in PnP D&D, but have to admit that Great CLeave has worked in Toee, cause weak monsters are everywhere.
As for The Mighty Cleave Wpns. here's how i do it in my PnP campaign, ( and how i believe it's supp. to work )
Withe the Cleave Feat, a character gets an extra attempt, not more cleave attacks, i.e he gets to reroll a missed Cleave roll.
with GREAT cleave a fghtr. will evnt miss so hell also reroll his missed roll.
I think the rules is unfair on this enchantment, i personally think ALL characters should benefit from enchantments like this.
As for TOEE i'll Have to visit the temple anew to find out more of how ATARI implemented this. i'll keep you posted

Well, what I've figured out so far (with help from some feedback on the same post on the Atari forum) is that the mighty cleave enchantment is designed for and only useful for characters who have taken cleave but not great cleave.
If a character has great cleave, mighty cleaving adds no benefit to their combat.
I have personally found that great cleave is fantastic for me (I've used it in all D&D PC games that feature it) because it allows me to get in a ton of attacks and shorten what could have been longer melees with many lower level foes (plus I love the animation for the greatsword great cleave in ToEE).
Since I am a power-gamer sort of guy, my higher level characters are able to make more use of great cleave than a less buffed character may be.
And by way of PnP - geez - when I stopped playing PnP the 2E rules had just come out - I don't think I ever even actually used the 2E rules, even though I had the books - so feats never existed for me back then.
Onward!
