is there no way to get the code book from sorttilde without killing her or stealing it?

You can sweet talk her out of it but only if you have not joined the thieves guild and only if your personality/speechcraft is high enough to get her disposition near 100. If you joined the thieves guild already then you either have to skip this quest or steal it from her. You should not kill her - talk to Percius Mercius, head of the Ald Ruhn fighters guild about what's going on with the new leadership of the fighter's guild. Some of their quests are bad. There's nothing wrong with skipping it. You can force other quests out of Fire-Eyes later on once you've advanced a bit in the guild. If you are playing a good char then you will be skipping a lot of fighter's guild quests. Percius is the former master of the guild and will advise you what to do.
