dwarves begone...
So whatever happened to those **** dwarves? I've asked people all over the map, but noone seems to know. At one point I found a book I thought solved the mystery, but alas I was wrong.
So has anybody succeeded? Where do I go? Who do I talk to?
Any help is appreciated...

The dwemer magician Kragenac found the heart of the god Lorkan buried in the ground and made special tools with which he could tap into its powers. During the battle of Red Mountain when General Neravar of the Chimer fought the Dwemer, Kragenac used these tools (they turn out to be Sunder and Keening) to strike the heart and the dwemer all disappeared. Some believe the dwemer were destroyed by Kragenac's tampering with the heart but others think they became immortal and went to another plane/planet.
There are lots of books and notes in the game you can read up on the lore and theories and piece things together. One is the note by Lord Vivic to the Dissident Priests that descibes the Battle of Red Mountain (get an advanced copy of it by breaking into the secret library or wait until Lord Vivic gives you a copy). Then there are the three dwemer books - Hanging Garden, Divine Metaphysics and well I forget the last ones name, but you can take them to Beladas and he can translate the two dwemer books using the third book as a translation key. He will also tell you what he thinks happened to the dwarfs. There are other books that tell the story of how Lorkan was killed for creating humans and his body became the "earth" which is why his heart is buried in it. In MW planes and planets and the old gods are all manifestations of the same thing. But to answer Trebonius' quest the three books and Beladas are the key.

Trebonius is not just making fun of you. Its a legitimate quest with a solution. Once you've taken the three books (Devine Metaphysics, Egg of Time and Hanging Gardens) to Beladas (in Gnisis) he will tell you his conclusion. Now go back to Trebonius and he accepts your report to close the quest. Asking the last dwarf in Tel Fyr will not suffice to complete Treboniius' quest.
Edit: Besides Trebonius there is another similar quest if you have joined House Telvanni. I believe you get it from one of the councilor's representatives in Sadrith Mora. You will be asked to find Beladas and ask him 3 questions - at least one of those questions is about the disappearance of the dwarfs.

All right guys, I appreciate the response...
I remember an earlier game I played, and I asked Beladas (sp?) the questions about the Dwarves. Actually most of what has been said in this thread are things that I vaguely remember npc's talking about in the game. I guess I was a book or two away from solving the quest...
By the way, the three books that you have to find for the telvanni guy in Gnisis aren't the three books you need for the dwarf-quest, are they? I might be getting my quests mixed up here (it's been a while since I played!), but I seem to remember him being important...
I'll get to the bottom of matters this time around!

I have (had) the same question but i just did like everyone told me to do: ignore Trebonious...
you don't need to do the stupid quest to become arch-mage... even if i did finish the quest I already killed Trebonious for the title of arch-mage...
I don't know if this helps but there is this dude in the city of... wait, i forgot... ummm... sorry but there is this guy in an underground hole who is sort of a loner magician, he tells u about he dwarves dissapearance...
I'll post when i remember...
(is it worth doing the quest? i mean, u should be well rewarded...)

Baladas in Gnisis you mean? the ex telvanni councillor
you do get a reward from trebonius, but i cant remember what it is. or if you get it off him anyway if you just kill him in the duel.
but you do get a reputation point, which is worth it
also his next mission, is to kill all the Telvanni counsel members... thats not really worth doing

Trebonius doesn't give you any reward that I know of for completing the Disappearance of the Dwarfs quest. I like the final quest he gives you. Besides his ring isn't that good so I like to spare the poor guy.
