npc leveling - Need Help With Meleny

i remember in the earlier patches i was able to choose what my npcs took as feats. i got meleny with me cuz i wanted her druid skills to power up my katana for my lvl 2 monk/ 8 fighter.

Do you mean you want her to "Craft Wondrous Items" like gloves or "Craft Arms & Armor" ?

I will try to fix her feat list for you, but i'm not sure if it can be done.

Ok , here i go..

I managed to do it, but there has been lot's of problems with editing this file successfully, so i'll just explain how it worked for me.

(i to have had problems, but i just now solved some of them)

First open the protos.tab file with NOTEPAD. Don't use Wordpad or any other yet, the game often will not load after doing things with Wordpad.

Then make sure Word Wrap is disabled. Do this in Notepad under the "Format" scroll-down menu (nr 3 left-to-right). If Word Wrap is "hooked", unhook it.

The beginning of the protos file should now look like this:

0 obj_t_portal
1 obj_t_portal
2 obj_t_portal
3 obj_t_portal
4 obj_t_portal
5 obj_t_portal

The lines shoul be on top of each other, but they are VERY long left-right. That's fine.

Meleny's line number is 14035 (obj_t_npc), so either scroll down to it or faster, use the Find ability and type Meleny. You are then at the end of her line.

At the start or end, use your arrow keys to scroll left or right untill you see two feats in her line : Spell Penetration & Alertness. Note that there is a tabulator of "6 spaces" between the feats.

Place the cursor directly after the last "s" in Alertness (looks like this: Alertness| ). Now hit your right-arrow ONE time to move the cursor 6 spaces further along the line. Here you want to type in the feat you wish for here.

Use exact feat name, you can get them from the feat.mes file found in your TOEE/data/mes directory. There HAVE to be a tab of 6 between her feats AFAIK, DON'T use SPACE, use RIGHT-ARROW to move the cursor-point.

That's it, do this and she will Craft for you

Also, save manually just in case. Don't save on exiting.

I had her take Craft Wondrous Items feat and Heighten Spell so she could cast spells from her lvl 5 slots.

do you know if there are only the starting feats in the protus.tab ?

...will these changes should effect NPCs who have joined the party already ?

...hmmm - if so I will change Kella's feats a little bit...

btw. is there any chance to add spells / or not existing scrolls like stoneskin to PCs / NPCs ? - there seems to be a major lack of scrolls in TOEE...

Well, if you wanna add scrolls to a PC, you can put them in the starting inventory for the class.

I have tried at least 50 times to change Npc's starting feats with no success ! Most often when i remove a feat and replace it the npc loose all feats and it picture is gone and its type change to "aberrition".

I can howerver "add" more feats after the ones listed.

I worked an entire night trying to give Ashrem (the evil cleric from the nodes) Domain Spells & Abilities, but without success. Arrgh !!

I'm still trying, so i'll keep you posted.

As for spells i've tried to add Fireball to Darley in numerous ways, also without success. Still working on that one too..

Protos.tab file only lists starting feats. I would love to learn how to script level-up feats for my Npc's. Some of them chose really bad feats. Ugh !

If you add a feat to a Npc, it takes effect immediately. Meleny was level 10 in my group when i gave her WIS 18, Heighten spell & Craft Wondrous Items. If done correctly the npc can be removed and rejoined into the party, but if you do something wrong either the game won't start or the npc can't dialouge.

So before trying anything, do a bakup of the protos.tab file. That way you don't get screwed.
