Excluding ToB summons I'd say Mordenkainen's Swords: immune to almost everything except pure magic damage, and a bunch of those buffed up with haste etc. make short work of almost everything.
And I like their sound :D
A cheesy bug with Mordenkainen's Sword is(was) that you could cast them without breaking invisibility in an earlier version ;)

Well...

Skels are a great working summons: cheap, magic resistant, immune to mind control, and last forever, so you can summon hordes with a bit of PI cheese.

Mord swords are the mid level fighting summons - immune to all but magical damage, great against melee-type opponents.

Planetars, well, they're just insanely good. And death spell doesn't work on them.
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

skellies are almost 100% immune to magic...they can wade thru incindiarty clouds...toss in a stinky cloud into a room, close door for a while, and send in skellys..immune to charm, sleep, stun,,,

all summons in soa, except demons, can be killed instantly by deathspell or death fog...it is NOT possible to make them immune to deathspell/fog

skeleton warriors are the limit for animate dead spell. that's all you get, no higher level skellys... :p

Well...

Skels aren't better than swords, they're different. The sword's immunity to weapon damage makes them VERY effective against anything that's melee centric.

Don't get me wrong, I love my skel warrior summons - they just have limitations.

Improved mages dissolve both with death spells though :(

This is where Jaheira's Insect Plague comes handy :D Or a superfast archer :D :D

Mages not casting Death Spell makes it too easy you'd agree...

horrid wilting - yes, fireballs - no

Swords are completely immune to everything except pure magic damage (Horrid Wilting, Magic Missiles, the magic damage from Keldorn's Hallowed Redeemer... anything else ? )

Do planetars count as summons ;)

Vorpal swords, spellcasting and such, they are not the most resistant, but are very powerful allies to have by your side!

Please remind me (I can't remember): Death Spell doesn't work on them (or did it)? They are extra-planar creatures, right?

Skull trap. Can be a bit tricky casting it at them as its fairly easy to miss...minor sequencer with two lots of magic missiles does the job. Or death spell of course. Running away from them is pretty effective too as they don't stay around for very long.

They're gated so are therefore immune to death spell, like demons. Quite what the difference between gated and summoned is I'm not sure...can't be to do with being extra-planar as efreet, elementals etc are all wiped out by death spell too.

Except the game quite often cheats and mages, liches (epecially liches) like to throw a scripted death spell as soon as they see a summons. But that's were the wild dog from monster summoning I comes in handy. Sorry pooch.

Can I make a case for improved Kitthix as a top summons...mirror imaged, hasted, regenerating makes him very hard to kill. The description is hilarious too... :D

And of course the nymph from call woodland beings is great too (for low level groups).

Skelleton warriors and Mordys are great, but I agree that imp. Kittix is a very powerfull ally, and with some P.I./Simulacrum cheese you can summon several imp. Kittix at the same time.
The druid fire elemental is also a great summon, and don't forget the elemental princes that are awesome (and are immune to death spell too).

Yes, distracting the lichie :D A wand of summoning is quite a nice thing to have (and keep recharching for free with your thief). The monsters are respectable (not the wild dog :) ) but are pure fodder to annoying enemies and their death spells. Poor power-blinded lich wasting her imprisonments on a ogre berserker or a gnoll elite LOL

You don't actually "recharge" them ;)
You sell them to a merchant (preferably one who buys stolen items, Roger the Fence and the Merchant in the Shadow Thieves headquarters for example) and then steal them back
- you could buy them back, too, but that get's a little bit expensive :) .
That will recharge any item with limited charges to it's maximum.
