Spoilers
Just completed the chapter one finale and couldnt find a use for the pedestal in the main room of Helms Hold. So I looked up the walkthrough at GameBanshee to see if I missed something and it says
Once you enter this room you will find 4 neutral Guardian Armors and a pedestal in the middle of the room. If you try to leave the Guardian Armors will attack and they are not the easiest opponents to deal with better yet four of them. You can either try to best them and choose an easier way. Place the etched gem you picked up from a corpse from the Courtyard and the guardians will then be activated but will not attack you. Instead they will roam the Hold and search and destroy all your enemies there. This action will also reward you with 50 experience points.
Um, four Guardian armours there but they didn't attack me at all when I left the room, and I didn't find anything on any corpses in the courtyard
also I chose the good path for the guardian and it(the walkthrough) says one of your options is insight on what is to come.
I have HoTu but no patches, Is the walkthrough wrong or what??
chapter one finale strange SPOILERS
Just tried it and they attacked me no problem. Luckily I could still wack them down for nice XP - but they were hard to hit.
I also banishing the demon and summoned the "good spirit".
And in the convesation the option to gain insight into the situation was there. It basically will let you ask some rather simple question and give vauge answers to them. Nothing much there though.
I doubt the lack of patches is why you didn't get the "insight" convesation option, but it could very well have to do with the guardian armours not attacking.
If you aren't running version 1.62 I recommend you to patch up, there is no reason for not running up-to-date version with maximum bug-fixing
Infact I find it strange if people don't, because patches usually means fixes (most often anyways )

I always have problmes with the armors attaacking, i think i have played chapter 1 about 4 times now, and only one time they attacked me. I think that has something to do with going into the caste by the frontdoor or by the cave.
About patching, the only problem is when you have a dialup line the download of a patch (some games have MASSIVE patches) can take quite some time and cost much money.

I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

I usually avoids the guardian armours - I didn't even find out about the gem until my 3rd replay , so I don't know their working very well.
It could quite possible be that you need to enter from the front door before they charge you.
As with large patches: Get people you know with broadband to download them and burn them on CDs for you
But yeah - I can see that could be a problem, if you haven't (or know anybody) acceess to faster/cheaper then dial-up with large patches.
I've had to resort to the Critical Update/patch for NwN a few times and that is a 70-90+ MB patch.
