i read that the skill mastery is supposed to make your character roll a natural 20 every time when opening locks and removing traps etc. i was watching closely and my level 14 fighter/6 rogue rolled 20 EVERY time anyways. is this a bug or what? i havnt seen it go under this. makes that special ability useless.
hehe a tip i found for HoTU is to level up to a fighter level 10 and save ALL the skill points then start to level as a rogue and at level 14/6 i had 23 in open locks, disable traps, search, spot, listen, 8 in parry, 5 in set traps (so i can get the synergy bonus).

The "rolls" of 20 are a part of NwNs way of using skills.
Basically - you will always "take 20" if you use such a skill out of combat. This is mentioned in the manual also.
Don't ask me why though - proberly to make it so one doesn't have to stand around and reroll all day I guess, but still takes something away from the game, imo.
Although, I could imagine (some) people doing a lot of save/load in conjunction with using skills, if the game rolled each time, and made it random instead of "Take 20".
Saving skillpoints is a general used technique, and I use it often myself also, although rarely for 10 levels. I don't want to live 10 levels in the game withouth any skillpoints in certain skills.
Only in HotU do I think it would be viable, unless one uses an existing character and thus starts a new character. (I always import one from NwN/SoU)

well in HoTU u start at level 15
create a new character, start as a rogue, level till level 10 fighter, then level the rest as rogue.
in the end be level 10 fighter/5 rogue with 18 in open lock, disable traps, search, spot, listen, parry, 7 in intimidate.
u get much more skills if u start first level as a rogue so i started over

But if you like me have a character higher then level 15 at the end of NwN or NwN/SoU, then I preferer to import that one, also because you have much more money and equiptment.
I haven't started 1 new character for HotU (except to just test something), all my runs through HotU are made with existing characters that are imported.
If starting a new character, saving all skillpoints for many levels (all levels) are viable, but imo not if it is a character you actually play the lower levels with also.

But don't you get your equipment nicked by the drow thief at the beginning of the game?
I presume this is to prevent what people like myself do, that is, create a module FULL of stuff, get your character in there and have them pick the lot up. I was all set to 'find' 300 odd rogue stones, and then remembered there wasn't much point to it....

Withouth spoiling to much - you will get most of it back at some point. And you get to keep cold hard cash, the thief doesn't steal that.
Also - another reason I always import, is that the characters I play through with, usually ends up higher then level 15. Especially if you import your NwN character into SoU and blast through that one slicing down Goblins and then into HotU. (Remember that SoU is made for a level 1 character to start - so always play it through at least once with a new character. )

Not sure if anyone cares anymore but this thread was origonally about skill mastery so I thought I'd clear that up.
In NWN you take a 20 on any skill roll when not in combat.
With skill mastery you take a 20 in combat as well. This is useful for skills like discipline and parry which are only used in combat.
IMO its a useful feat but not useful enough to be an epic feat
