Problems with Elmo

Post by Vivi »

I know he's a drunk and all but.... Right after fighting the Umber Hulks on level 3 (in which Elmo did get confusion), I began having problems with him. Each time I would engage in combat after that point when it came to Elmo's turn, if I attempted any type of attack or movement with him other then just skipping him by hitting enter, the game would go into limbo (as opposed to completely crashing). Music would still be playing, I could look around the map, but that's about it. This only happened with Elmo, as the rest of my party was fine. I tested this in several different battles, computer restarts, etc. Eventually I just took him back to Hommlet and dropped him off, much to my disappointment.

(I had planned on finishing this run of ToEE with Elmo, Otis, and Mother Screng. My party is neutral good with a Paladin and they all fit in well. Unfortunately Hruda had a horrible accident with a lizard on our trip from Nulb to Hommlet.)

I realize that ToEE is buggish, but I haven't seen this particular issue mentioned anywhere so I have two questions.

1. Has anyone else had this problem?
2. If so, and I go pick up Elmo again, will he be back in working order? (I plan on doing so after escorting dear Prince Thrommel out of the temple.)

Thanks!

Probably not as the save contains all the NPC flags as set during game play. It seems to me that what ever happened during that battle one of the flags or stats on Elmo (probably still confussed yet doesn't register or it could be some other flag got set) Anyway what ever is set seems to put's the combat phase in an infinite loop (or near infinite loop) when using Elmo... much the same as the event loops in the elemental nodes (when you move the mouse too suddenly or too far).

Just grasping at straws - Something you may try is to try unsetting what may have happened to Elmo - via Dispell magic, Heal or restoration or some like spells.

Thanks. I thought it might be something like that. I did go get Elmo again and he's fine, even without casting dispel or anything like that. Apparently whatever was going on was resolved by dropping in off and coming to get him later.

I found a simliar problem with Elmo and my honey found out with Wonnlion(sp)

Here it is:

In the 3rd level of the temple you incounter a Lamin. When I was fighting her she casted charm on Elmo. I countered her reaction with Dismiss Magic on Elmo. It took off the charm but, he continued to attack us and was bleeped from my band of party members.
I had to reload the game and this time I had to keep Elmo from even being seen from her angle. It worked.

Then my honey started his game and got to the same point. Same thing happened to him but this time with Wonnlion(sp). The Lamin casted charm on him, he conutered casted with Dispell Magic. Then he noticed the same thing as I encountered. Wonnlion(sp) was dispelled but he was removed from the list of party memebers. Wonnlion(sp) continued to attack his party but instead of my honey doing what I did he choose to kill Wonnlion(sp) and go from there.

I dunno if this was a major bug we both encountered or the Lamin just doesnt like Npcs', never the less it was highly annoying.

I had the same problem with the Laima, except when she casted charm on Mother Screng, I didn't think to try dispel. I noticed she left my party and was no where to be found after the the battle. I just reloaded and did the battle over, keeping all NPCs out of combat. I'm not sure if it's a bug either or supposed to be this way, but when I cast charm monster, I notice that after the battle is complete, I still have a Ogre following me around until I initiate an attack on it. It may be that when an NPC is charmed, you just lose them from your party and not a bug, just like if you do the charming on a monster, they essentially leave your enemy's party.
