Marvel Movies
Now i have seen most if not all of the latest Marvel moves.
1. X-men 1 and 2
2. Spider man
3. DareDevil
4. The Punisher
5. The Hulk
Now they have been pretty good. But the hulk was horrible. I havent seen Hellboy or spawn, but one thing i have realised after watching the punisher today is that the movies are too PC compared to the comics. The Punisher was dark in my opinion. But not dark enough. There was not enough shown of the dark side of humanity and of men. It was dark enough for people to stomach it and say it was ok.
Daredevil my friends didnt like because they said it was weird. I guess the extremely pathetic level of darkness there is what turned them off and that Electra actually lived which was pretty pathetic.
The X-men again not dark enough. The X-men comics arent dark but they deal with alot of hard hitting issues which arent even mentioned in the movies and if they are they are glanced over.
Anyway what did people think of Hellboy and Spawn. I haevnt seen those two.

Problem is, most of these comics have an underlying criticism of society and I doubt that's acceptable in the US these days. Hollywood makes very sure not to offend anyne too much, and especially not the government - being the propaganda machinery of choice as they are.

Marvel’s on a roll. While some of their recent films have been mediocre, I haven’t actually disliked any of them. Here’s how they rate on the Kayless-O-Meter:
Blade: 6.5
Some nice action (especially in the rave scene in the beginning) but nothing special. The morbidly obese vampire in the basement was kind of funny too (in a grotesque way). Not much to it really. Still, it kept me entertained.
Favorite Line(s):
Frost: “You’re dead, Pearl. Have the good grace to die with some f-ing dignity.”
Whistler: “What is it?”
Blade: “A page from the book of Arabus.”
Whistler: “Smells like some vampire wiped his ass with it.”
X-Men: 7.5
A real mixed bag. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart are both perfectly cast (as Wolverine and Xavier, respectively) but I think most of the others; i.e. Ian McKellen, Anna Paquin, Famke Janssen and Halle Berry (all fine actors in their own right) were miscast. Also, Magneto’s plot to turn the world’s leaders into mutants is sacrilegious. Magneto would never bestow the gift of mutanthood on regular humans, not the mention the very idea is antithetical to the buried themes of the comics (It’s like Malcom X turning white people black). Wolverine in the bar in the beginning was great though.
Favorite Line(s):
Emcee: “Whatever you do, don't hit him in the balls.”
Bar Thug: "You said anything goes."
Emcee: "It's anything goes, but he'll take it personal."
Rogue: ”When they come out, does it hurt?”
Wolverine: "…Every time."
Wolverine: "Sabretooth? Cyclops? Storm? What do they call you, Wheels? "
Wolverine: "It’s me! "
Cyclops: "Prove it."
Wolverine: "You’re a d**k. "
Cyclops: "Okay."
Spider-Man: 8.5
Spider-Man is half of a great movie. The fist half, with Peter Parker getting bitten, discovering his powers, learning that “With great power comes great responsibility” was perfect. Unfortunately, the movie loses steam about halfway through. The Green Goblin’s costume was a bit of a letdown too (and I’m not crazy that they combined Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson into one character). It was great fun though, just a bit frustrating since it could have been much better.
Favorite Line(s):
Uncle Ben “This guy, Flash Thompson, he probably deserved what happened. But just because you can beat him up, doesn’t give you the right to. Remember, with great power comes great responsibility.”
Peter Parker: “I missed him a lot today.”
Aunt May: “I know. I miss him too.”
Peter Parker: “I can't help thinking about... the last thing I said to him. He tried to tell me something important, and I threw it in his face.”
Aunt May: “You loved him. And he loved you. He never doubted the man you'd grow into; how you were meant for great things. You won't disappoint him.”
Peter Parker: “Spider-Man wasn't trying to attack the city, he was trying to save it. That's slander.”
J. Jonah Jameson:“It is not, I resent that! Slander is spoken. In print, it's libel.”
Peter Parker: “You don’t trust anyone, that’s your problem.”
J. Jonah Jameson:“I trust my barber. What are you, his lawyer? Let him sue me, get rich like a normal person!”
Aunt May: “You do too much, college, a job, all this time with me. You're not Superman you know.”
Green Goblin: “Spider-Man! This is why only fools are heroes, because you never know when some lunatic will come along with a sadistic choice!”
Daredevil: 8.0
Not bad, not bad at all. I enjoyed this movie more than the first X-Men and Blade, though not as much as Spider-Man. The Blind-o-vision was nicely done though I wish they didn’t use as much CGI for stunts. Michael Clarke Duncan is perfect as the Kingpin and Jennifer Garner was good as Electra. Ben Affleck’s Daredevil was a bit more violent than the comic version (who would never had let that gangster get run over by the train early in the film) but still nice. Colin Farrell was a hoot as Bull’s-eye and Evanescence’s music was awesome too. All in all, while not spectacular, still a fine effort.
Favorite Line(s):
Daredevil: “That white light at the end of the tunnel? That's not heaven, that's the C train!”
Matt Murdock: “Excuse me, could you tell me where I could find some honey?”
Elektra: [Not looking up] “Its right in front of you.”
Matt Murdock: "You're going to need to be a little more specific."
Elektra: “What are you-”
Matt Murdock: "Blind?"
Bull’s Eye “I want a costume!”
Hulk: 7.0
Hmmm… There’s a weird dichotomy to this film (but I guess that mirrors Banner himself). It’s a slow, dramatic piece for the first half-hour then the Hulk comes around a starts tearing crap up. Despite the odd pacing I did like the way it dealt with repression and rage and the Hulk scenes were fun (the Hulk dog fight was probably my favorite). Most of the actors didn’t really stand out for me, although Sam Elliot was nice as General Thunderbolt Ross (he just looks great in a uniform).
Favorite Line(s):
David Banner: "You're going to have to watch that temper of yours."
Bruce Banner: "Talbot!"
Glen Talbot "Yeah?"
Bruce Banner: "You're making me angry!"
Glen Talbot "Oh, am I?"
Bruce Banner: "You're not gonna like me when I'm angry!"
X2: 9.5
Now that’s more like it! The biggest compliment I can pay this film is that it feels like an X-men story (unlike the first one). Alan Cumming is perfectly cast as Nightcrawler in this film. With the exception of Stewart and Jackman I wasn’t too thrilled with the cast the first time around, but in X2 even they deliver good performances (the better story couldn’t have hurt). Nightcrawler’s attack on the White House is mind-blowingly cool, as is Magneto’s escape from his plastic prison and Storm’s way of dealing with enemy jets. Of course, being a Wolvie fan, my favorite moments come from Hugh Jackman. The man embodies Wolverine. Watching him go berserk and ruthlessly dispatch the soldiers invading the mansion sent chills down my spine, as did his flashback to the Weapon X procedure (especially the part where he looks at the blood-soaked claws protruding from his hands and lets out this primal roar of pain, confusion, and rage all in one). His fight with Deathstrike was great, like watching two immortals tearing the crap out of each other but unable to die. The ending hints at the direction a third movie might go and I personally can’t wait.
Favorite Line(s):
Wolverine: "You picked the wrong house bub!"
Iceman’s Dad: “What exactly are you a professor of Mr. Logan?”
Wolverine: "Art."
Wolverine: [After stabbing Stryker] "How does it feel, bub?"
Stryker: “Why did you come back?”
Wolverine: “You cut me open! You took my life!”
Stryker: “You make it sound as if I stole something from you. As I recall it was you who volunteered for the procedure.”
Wolverine: “Who am I?”
Stryker: “You are just a failed experiment. If you really knew about your past, the kind of person you were, the work we did together… People don’t change Wolverine. You were an animal then and you’re an animal now. I just gave you claws.”
I can't wait to see how Spider-Man 2 turns out.

I've seen some of thoese (X-Men 1/2, Spiderman, Daredevil) - but never liked or been interested in the comics, so I've watched the films for the entertainment value, and must say that X-Men 1 is the best of thoese. Daredevil sucked bit time in my oppinion, the story was bad and the acting was even worse - I seriously think it would have been better if somebody else then Affleck played Daredevil. But there are to many "holes" in his "superpowers" that I didn't fall for the story.
I think you have to like/read/love the comics to get the full of thoese movies, because as pure entertaiment they are adequte, but not really that captivating

Don't bother seeing Spawn, it sucks to high heaven, and it's not a Marvel movie. Neither is Hellboy, but it's brilliant. One of the most entertaining action/dark fantasy films I've ever seen.

X2 has been my favorite by far (Mostly because of Byan Cox, and that awesome music
).
Afterwards, I was very pleasantly surprised by Spiderman. Much more entertaining than I expected.
X Men for me was good at setting up the world, but just didn't really have any particulaly great parts IMO.
Blade was also surprisingly adequate.
Otherwise, I haven't seen Daredevil or The Hulk. I have Hulk on DVD, but I'm not rushing to see it.
I'm planning to rent Blade II in the next few weeks, and I'm gonna see Hellboy in the next week or so.

I am a huge marvel fan boy.
Kayless basically put it best on all levels. My biggest gripe recently is with the punisher story... recently I've gotten really into his books. The new ones are bad ass with the viet nam story line etc.. but in the movie.. (SPOILER)
He knows exactly who killed his family... he gets his revenge. Isn't that just wrong... his whole point is he never truly knows if he got them or not thats why he keeps on a punishin.

I'd have to say that I enjoyed all the Marvel movies that I've seen, Spiderman, X-Men 1 and 2, The Hulk, and The Punisher, but the best of them would have to be The Hulk, it offered far more of an intricate explanation of a plot then the Hulk comics did, and especially compared to the cartoon. Also the cinematography that Ang Lee used in the story's portrayal suited the movie beautifully.
From "Feet of Clay" By Terry Pratchett:
"It seemed to be a chronic disease. It was as if even the most intelligent person had this little blank spot in their heads where someone had written: "Kings. What a good idea." Whoever had created humanity had left in a major design flaw. It was its tendency to bend at the knees.

Honestly i think Kayless you are giving the marks a little to high. X-men was a let down. I am a wolverine fan but hey the x-men are a team not just one main character. Personally think Cyclops was under-played. He is the team leader. He always takes the big scarifice. You dont see that in the movie. All you see is Wolverine, Wolverine and Wolverine. It is very annoying. If they plan on doing that to the third movie i am not gonna bother even watching it.
Plus to go off topic i think wolverine is an uber character. One that everyone loves because of his attitude, but he is not as realistic as the other characters. His character is stagnat. Its basically pain, kill more pain kill. Other characters have more depth say Colossus. Now i had tears in my eyes when he took the final plunge.
I guess i grew up reading marvel comics so i am a little harsher than most people about the movies.
However Spiderman deserved all its acclaim. It was a good movie and honestly it was true to the comic books in my opinion. Daredevil as well. but then i like to see the darkness in society protrayed in movies. These villians are not nice guys they will kill you for no reason like they killed DD's father. But it was not protrayed that darkly which i didnt like. However i loved the scene at the end of Daredevil, where he breaks his knees. He wont kill but he will deal out damage and punishment.
Hulk sucked. Lousy plot, no story. But i think the entire comic isnt much to work with either.

@CM - I'd be the first to agree that there wasn't much to work with given the Hulk concept, but I'd have to disagree with it having a lousy plot, as it attempts to portray an inner conflict between Banner and the Hulk, and while that may be deemed cheesy, or been used in far too many movies as a basis for a plot, I still think that The Hulk managed to depict an interesting view of the Hulk concept, and at least it changed some of the less bearable elements like the nuclear explosion and Rick.

@CM without a doubt if one was to completly compare the xmen movies to the comics you could put a huge argument how both movies were let downs. Starting in my opinion with the lack of character depth in Cyclops. I agree with you on Colossus, I mean peter was awsome and to see him go was very sad.
These movies are Brian Singers interpetations. You have to have a protaganist to make a movie succesful, sure I'd watch any marvel movie even if it was just about Maggot. The fact is to make it succesful you need a point of attention, you need a character that the story moves around. What better character than Wolverine! (Well except gambit whom in himself is the *****enst Xmen) I'd agree on the uber char but then again who isn't an uber char now adays... how many deaths has cyclops escaped, and spiderman and the punisher etc. Wolverines storyline has been extremly done well recently... with Origins wolvie was relived in another light.. with the Ultimate line of comics Wolvie is fun again...
BTW any movie with a good interpetation of the KINGPIN is a *****en movie..

Oh man, I couldn’t disagree with you more. First off, all comic book characters are fairly stagnant. That’s pretty much their defining feature. Secondly, DC’s Lobo is the sort of “kill, pain, kill” with no substance character you’re talking about, but Wolverine is most definitely not. Read some of Chris Claremont or Jim Lee’s stuff on him and you’ll see he has depth.
I guess i grew up reading marvel comics so i am a little harsher than most people about the movies.
I grew up reading Marvel comics too. I guess we just have different tastes (And I'm pretty easily entertained too. It doesn't take a pretentious art film to hold my interest).
Hulk sucked. Lousy plot, no story. But i think the entire comic isnt much to work with either.
Hulk is character driven rather than plot driven. Its emphasis was on the personalities and reactions of the characters rather than a standard comic book plot.
Well the ratings on the Kayless-O-meter are just my personal opinion.
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

X2 is, by far, the best comic book movie ever. I haven't seen Hellboy, but apparently its pretty good. Blade II was decent, had a line I really liked ("You do not know who you're f-ing with!").
Can't wait for Spiderman 2.
I want a movie with Deadpool in it.

Hey, wasn't there rumors (if not official statements) of a Ghost Rider movie in the works?
Dungeon Crawl Inc.: It's the most fun you can have without 3 midgets and a whip! Character stats made by your's truly!

Doh!
I forgot to do Blade 2. I haven't seen any of the others (Punisher, or Hell Boy) yet. I really liked that Blade line too (though for T.V. commercials they changed it to "messing" with).

Yes, there is a Ghost Rider movie in the works. Nick Cage is supposed to be in the lead.

well, call me a cynic, but a film about the incredible hulk is in a lot of trouble if it has to rely on deep, compelling characters. oh, and most character driven storylines are a little less heavy on computer generated destructifying

I duuno, to me the Hulk is about more than just a giant green dude throwing a tantrum and tearing crap up. Stan Lee based the Hulk on Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein, both of which were very thought provoking characters/stories. The reason why Lee's comic creations are so successful, IMHO, is that there's more to them the meets the eye (the Hulk is an Id monster born of repression, the X-Men tackles racism, Spider-Man is an nerdish everyman who's real life is more stressful than his superhero career, etc.)

Perhaps Hulk will set a trend.

I for one would pay to see a french arthouse film in which a leading character stops staring into their own navel while moaning about their relationships and transforms into a giant green effects-magnet and starts throwing around helicopter gunships like monkeys throw their own poo

Well, it would be very interesting to see what someone else than Hollywood would do with the whole superhero concept.
I'm anxiously awaiting Spidey 2 though and I'll be the first in line for X-Men 3... 'cause it's going to deal with (Dark) Phoenix and stuff. That means more screentime for Jean Grey. Plus, Halle Berry has demanded more scenes as well, so I'll guess we'll see more of Storm too. Those are good things. I'm a Wolverine fan, but sometimes the comics and certainly the movies made it more like 'Wolverine, co-staring the X-Men'.
