BG2 Party Question
BG2 Party Question
hi everyone, just wondering. My exams finish this Friday and im gonna start a new game on BG2 and then buy BG3 sometime and carry on with it
Ive already done everything on BG2 this time last year, i think the party was Me (Fighter) Jaheira, Nadia (the mage woman), Edwin, Imoen, and some other hard fighter.
Basically, it was a pretty bog standard party. What i want to do this time is have a more...... unique one. Youk now what i mean? it got boring using the same techniques, can anyone suggest some parties that i could have?
i would LIKE to have one set up from characters in the game, however if thats not possible then i could pre make them i suppose
Another question, before reinstalling BG2 do you think its worth getting a patch? about a year ago i heard of the Darkest Day patch, is it any good? or is there others
thanks
TROD.

TROD, welcome to the forums. When you say DD patch, I think you mean mod. Just want to pass that along, because there are many mods for BG2. Check the sticky threads at the top of the patch, for a lengthy list of available mods. Many of them are truly excellent.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
hi again, ive read through the stickies and a few of the links and even as a customed BG player whose played it for years now, im a little confused.
Sorry but obviously seeing as though ive only ever played the original games i dont know which is better Ideally i was thinking of something along the lines of a few new characters, a few new stories, a few new weapons and items.
However, most of these seem to be editing dificculty or something else, do you see what i mean?

Well..
"Better" is a bit of a null question here - it's a matter of taste, about like you asking us which flavor of ice cream you should order. We can tell you some popular ones, but that's not necessarily the right thing for you. It would be good if you could tell us a little more about what you want.
Do you want a mage heavy party? melee heavy? all gnome? Funny, wierd, evil?
Do you want more difficulty? - download the Tactics and spell-50 mods
Do you want more/better weapons & gear? dowload bonus merchants, item upgrade and underrepresented weapons
Do you want new (non-Bioware) NPCs? Tashia, Solaufein, Valen, Kelsey, Chloe are all good NPC, and there's more where they came from...
Do you want a party with all new Bioware NPCs? Any particular flavour?
Do you want Bioware NPCs, but modified? get & use Shadowkeeper
Well, there's a start...

I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

Er... i dont mind either party style, just something more normal than the usual setup if you know what i mean (e.g. i often go for 3 fighters, 1 cleric and 2 mages)
I dont want it more difficult, i found that one of the great achievements of BG2 was the fact it was perfectly difficult.
I would like a few new weapons and items yeah, just to make the game more interesting. But not really upgrades to make weapons better
Yeah thats one thing, i wouldnt mind having say 4 or 5 more NPC's to interact with and use in my party, that would be my main addition.
I didnt think Bioware had actually released more NPC's for BG2, i thought they'd only released the ones on the game?
I dont really know what you mean with the last question...

Bioware hasn't released any additional characters, the additional characters come from the mod community. There are quite a few of those around, Tashia, Kelsey, etc. These aren't really game altering mods, just more or less new characters to play with, with new dialigues, romance options, some quests, etc.
What shadow keeper is is a game editor. You use it to open saved games and edit a ton of stuff. You can use it to modify your characters in your party by changing their class, proficiencies, skill points...that's what nephtu meant by modifying the Bioware characters.
Check out each of the mods websites that are linked in the sticky thread. Most of them have descriptions of what changes to expect to your game from the mod.
If you're looking for new NPC's for the most part without altering to much of the game itself playwise, you'd probably be fine just getting a few of the NPC mods and installing them. TDD is a mod that adds several new NPC's, along with new character kits, new enemies, a couple new quests, but it is pretty big download, and may be a little more than what you sound like you are looking for.
yeah that sounds a lot like im looking for, like i say a few characters here and there would be nice.
Where can i find it? i looked at the stickies and couldnt see it
TROD.
Try starting Here - for MOD NPCs Tashia & Kelsey (both Sorcerors) are very popular, as are Solaufein (Fighter/Mage, won't join untill the Underdark) and Valen (CE Vampire fighter/thief - WAY cheesy). I'm also liking Chloe (a funky Kensai) pretty well. You might like the unfinished business and underrepresented weapons MODs, too, plus perhaps Ease-of-Use, at least for unlimited stacking.
- unless you've already played with all (or at least most) of the Bioware NPCs you may want to consider some of them - like (flavor to taste) Jan, Valygar, Viconia & Aerie, plus whatever types you didn't have from Anomen / Keldorn / Korgan / Mazzy.

Tashia mod you download and it puts Tashia in the game. Kelsey mod you download and you get Kelsey. Each mod gives you a character. They don't all come as a package deal, as not all of them are created by the same individual. All of the mods will work on their own, so you don't have to DL any character you don't think you wouyld want.

By "bog standard", should I assume you mean that your party members possessed the skills of warriors, clerics, mages, and thieves? If that's what you mean, I don't know how to avoid that if you want a well-balanced party. If the battles are boring to you, then you should try a new playing style. That doesn't require you to change your party members; all you have to do is use new spells or different kinds of weapons. You can also install some patches that make the game more challenging, such as the Tactics MOD.
In addition to skills, parties also vary according to PERSONALITY. That's where trying new NPCs will give you the most satisfaction. Try this party:
Wild Mage (Main Character) (NOTE: Don't reload if, er, unexpected things happen)
Minsc and Boo
Jan
Aerie
Haer'Dalis
Keldorn
That should be sufficiently...diffferent...from your last experience, and plenty of fun. You'll get some interesting dialogue. And it's a pretty powerful party, too.
If you want to hack the characters, you could make Minsc a Berserker (Fighter kit), or make Aerie a single-class Cleric or a single-class Illusionist (to level up faster), or make Haer'Dalis a Swashbuckler, or make Keldorn a Cavalier (although he's fine as an Inquisitor). There's no need to make your own characters when the NPCs can be anything you want them to be.
Another question, before reinstalling BG2 do you think its worth getting a patch? about a year ago i heard of the Darkest Day patch, is it any good? or is there others
Well, you definitely want to install Throne of Bhaal and finish the saga. That's number one. Other than NPC MODs, which simply add new NPCs to the game, there are also some MODs that add new quests, as well as some patches that fix problems in the game or add new items or change the monsters so that your encounters are more...interesting.
If you install Throne of Bhaal, I strongly recommend the Ascension MOD. The Baldurdash Fix Pack is also essential, and the Weimar Ease-of-Use MOD makes some very convenient changes to the game. I mentioned the Tactics MOD above. If you install those and use the party I recommended above, you'll be off to a great start. Read about some of the other MODs and see if they appeal to you.
